Priority of Effective Regions on Flood Peak by Using of RS GIS Techniques and HEC HMS Model at Halilrud Basin Farshad solaimani sardoo jiroftamin@yahoo com Wednesday May 27 2009 Natural resources college Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 8311 IranDegree M sc Language FarsiSaid Soltani ssoltani@cc iut ac ir Ali salajeghe salajegh@ut ac irAbstractFlood is one of the destructive hazards worldwide which effects human communities eachyear Looking at the number of flood events each year shows that flood in not a event anymore but is a frequent one Although most of the flood events are made by storm andheavy rainfall but inappropriate land use policies has intensified the flood impacts There isa balance between atmospheric and environmental factors though the multiplicativestructure of the nature The pressure of growing population and illogical application havedestroyed this balance in a way that the degradation is accelerated and bring destructiveevents like flood to human populations Therefore it is necessary to identify the reasonsand factors on flood events as well as mitigation methods in watersheds The best way forthis is the hydrologic priority analysis of the watersheds in relation to flood creation Thepresent study is applied in Jiroft dam watershed to identify flood high potential basinsusing RS GIS and HEC HMS techniques The map of soil hydrologic group was firstprepared using GIS on the basis of soil group map Joining the hydrologic group and landuse map provided by Landsat and ETM imagine the curve number map was produced The digital elevation map was then prepared based on topographic 1 25000 map and thehydrologic basins were identified using HEC GEO HMS and ArcHydro softwares Thepeak floods of the basins were then simulated using HEC HMS Using curve number lagtime area and rainfall for flood potential index F f the flood potential for each basinwas calculated The results show that K4 and K6 basins have the highest flood potentialindex and the flood potential increases toward upstream Jiroft Dam watershed and theupstream branches have the higher participation in flood at the outlet of the watershed The check dams could be appropriate management strategy to reduce flood potential inthese basins according to the curve number map and rock land cover of them but biologicpractices are recommended for sustainable development of the watershed Key words Flood potential RS and GIS techniques HEC HMS model K4 and K6 basins JiroftDam watershed
