The effects of seasonal variability on amino acid composition of zooplankton crustacean in Hanna wetland Mahsa Mahmoudi Khoshdarehgy E mail mahsa mahmoodi@yahoo com April Department of Natural Resources Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan IranDegree M sc Language FarsiE Ebrahimi Assist Prof Supervisor e ebrahimi@cc iut ac irO Farhadian Assist Prof Supervisor omfarhad@cc iut ac irAbstractWetlands are one of the most productive ecosystems Thay are important both ecologically andeconomically as thay serve as breeding feeding and nursery fish grounds for many aquatic organismsincluding fish Forthermore thay support the wildlife such as migratory birds One of the important groupof living organisms is zooplankton Thay are basis for food web in aquatic ecosystems and transfer energyfrom microalgae to the higher throphic levels Zooplanktons as first consumers are a suitable live food forthe aquatic larvae such as fish due to small size planktonic nature highly reproductive rate valuableamino acid and fatty acid profile better digestion and highly growth rate Therefore these creatures areimportant for aquaculture industry as live food and also as ecological indexes for monitoring of aquaticecosystems Although there are many report on amino acid profile of different zooplankton groups fromseparated geographical location information on amino acid composition of mixed zooplankton fromIranian aquatic ecosystems are scarce The objectives of this study were to identify zooplankton species determine biomass and density of zooplankton measurement of amino acids composition of freshwaterzooplankton in Hanna wetland latitude N longitude E altitude m during fourseason Seasonal field samplings were carried out at middle of each season for one year period from May to Febuary The zooplankton samples were collected by vertical haul using plankton net m and diameter of cm from three sites in the Hanna wetland For amino acid measurementzooplankton samples were initially freez dried and then subjected to HPLC High Performance LiquidChromatography Results showed that there is no significant differences the biomass ofzooplankton samples between sites P the highest in site mg m and the lowest in site mg m The total density of cladocerans was highest in spring ind L including four speciesof Daphnia longispina D dubia D pulex and Moina macrocopa The identified copepod species were allbelong to cyclopoids with the highest density observed in fall ind L The abundance ofcladocerans and copepods in mixed zooplankton population were different The maximum abundance ofcladocerans was observed in spring in population while the abundance of copepods were thehighest in summer in population and fall in population The protein contents inzooplankton were and dry weight for spring summer fall and winterrespectively The total essential amino acids EAA were and while totalnon essential amino acids NEAA were and obtained in spring summer fall and winter respectively Among EAA arginine threonine thyrosine and methionine showed higher amount compared to others during study period Correspondingly glutamic acid alanine and aspartic acid were the highest comparedto other NEAA in zooplankton samples The results of this study illustrated that zooplankton collected fromHanna wetland could be suitable as live food for larval rearing of carp and rainbow trout because they meettheir nutritive requriments Keywords Amino acid Freshwater zooplankton Seasonal variability Hanna wetland Iran
