Synthesis of Nitriles and Amides in presence Ionic Liquidwith Using Microwave Iradiation Vapor phase dehydrationof 2 octanol over modified ZrO2 TiO2 Mahtab Yadolahi yadolahim@yahoo com Aprile 2009 Department of chemistry Isfahan University of Technology 84156 83111 IranSupervisor Prof Mehran Ghiaci mghiaci@cc iut ac irAdvisor Prof Shadpour Mallakpour mallak@cc iut ac irDepartmant Graduate coordinator Prof Bijan NajafiAbstract In this work we report clean effective and simple method for one pot synthesis ofamide and nitrile in the presence of ionic liquid using microwave irradiation under mildsolvent condition Initially BMIM C12H25SO3 was synthesized as a new ionic liquid Finally the nitriles and amides were synthesized with microwave irradiation This methodwhich we have used for producing nitriles and amides is described as following In the firststep we mixed aldoxime or ketoxime p toluenesulphonic acid and BMIM C12H25SO3 together and put the reaction mixture in the microwave The reaction mixture was irradiated ina domestic microwave oven at 500 W for 10 sec The Corresponding amides and nitriles wereobtained in excellent yield For example 3 4 dimethoxybenzaldehydeoxime andsalicylaldoxime were treated with different ionic liquid under irradiation of microwace to givearomatic nitriles in 44 99 yield respectively Three kind of ionic liquid BMIM C12H25SO3 BMIM Br and PPIM Br were investigated in this project While BMIM C12H25SO3 was more effective in this dehydration and gave 99 yield for salicylnitrile Itshould be noted that the nitriles were formed in only 20 yield in the absence of the catalyst These products were monitored by TLC Finally the nitriles and amides were characterizedwith FTIR spectroscopy In summary we have demonstrated the use of an inexpensive easyto handle and environmentally ionic liquid in rapid one pot synthesis of nitriles and amidefrom aldoximes and ketoximes in high yields ZrO2 TiO2 mixed oxides with a Zr and Ti molar ratio of 1 1 were prepared with andWithout surfactant The obtained mixed oxide has an amorphous structure and showed bettercatalytic activities in compare with the mixed oxides prepared via co precipitation route Surfactant addition caused an increase in surface area and improved the catalytic properties ofthis mixed oxide Catalysts containing 0 35 H3PO4 were prepared using these mixed oxideand the catalytic performance of each material for vapor phase dehydration of 2 octanol wasdetermined These mixed oxides were characterized by several methods At Optimizedcondations the maximum conversion of 2 octanol and maximum selectivity to 1 octene wasachieved over 15 wt H3PO4 ZrO2 TiO2 surf at 350 C The effect of time on strem wasstudied over 15 wt H3PO4 ZrO2 TiO2 surf at 350 C KeywordsNitrile Amide Aldoxime Ketoxime Ionic liquid BMIM C12H25SO3 BMIM Br PPIM Br p toluenesulphunic acid FTIR TLC 15 wt H3PO4 ZrO2 TiO2 surf 2 octanol 1 octene
