Economic and Social Evaluation of Saffron Production in Southern Khorasan Province Iran Mostafa Teimoori m teimoori1982@yahoo com 24 July 2009 Department of Rural Development Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree MS c Language FarsiSupervisors Asist Prof A M Amini and Prof J Mir Mohamad SadeghiAbstract Saffron is a permanent plant that really work in dry continent As continental conditions of Iranand especially Southern Khorasan province that water shortage is one of the most importantfactor in the process of agricultural development enterprise and extension of this plant is verynecessary and important The object of this study is to assess the social and economic influenceof Saffron plant in Southern Khorasan province We use questionnaire as tool of adding data The population of sample estimated 265 from Kukran formula For doing pretest 30 farmerfilled the questionnaire randomly then for anglicizing data and calculating reliability ofquestionnaire soft ware package of SPSS 13 and also this soft ware used at next steps forcalculating correlate coefficient f test regression and hypothesis test The results show thatsome variables become decrease along the time like agrarian space that planted each year amount of production and rate of people engagement that produce Saffron Vise versa somevariable become increase along the time like amount of production per hectare income Correlation analysis showed that there isn t relationship between farmer s output and somevariables like age and amount of agrarian Vise versa there is a positive relationship betweenfarmer s output and some independent variables like rate of literacy rate of farming knowledgeand cooperation to village s social structres And also there is a negative relationship betweenfarmer s output and some variables like farming history and agrarian space that planted Saffroneach year The results also showed that there is a meaning deference in output variable betweenthe farmers that participate in educational extensional classes and farmers that don t participatein these classes Also this deference of farmer s output was meaningful about the farmers thathave social responsibility or not and also kind of use of farms Key Words Saffron Economic Social Southern Khorasan
