Elastic buckling of curved plates with different end conditions and longitudinal stiffened plates using the finite strip method Mansoureh Shahabi mansooreh iut@yahoo com 25 May 2009 Department of Civil Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiDr Mojtaba Azhari mojtaba@cc iut ac ir Abstract Plate structures are as important structural components in a number of branches ofengineering including mechanical civil marine and aeronautical engineering Often suchstructures are assemblies of component flat and curved plates which are rigidly connectedtogether at their longitudinal junction lines such that the structure is basically prismatic The finite strip method is an efficient and accurate method for the analysis of this type ofstructures The method can be used in the analysis of various types of behavioral response butconcern in this research is with calculating critical stresses and static analysis of prismaticcurved plates with any boundary conditions at their circumferential edges In order to estimatethe displacement in longitudinal direction in each case the efficient sinusoidal functions havebeen developed and also in circumferential direction polynomial functions have been used This paper presents buckling and static analysis of flat and curved plates Furthermorestability of curved plates with various loading on circumferential edges such as uniformpressure triangular pressure and pure bending in addition to uniform pressure in longitudinaldirection have been done Study the effect of curvature in circumferential direction onbuckling of these structures is one of the purpose of this research and another scope isanalysis of mixed structures consist of flat and curved plates Finally the influense oflongitudinal stiffeners in order to increase the critical load of curved plate have beeninvestigated KeywordsFinite strip method Buckling Curved plates Longitudinal stiffeners
