Lateral Behavior Study of Light Weight Steel Frame With Diagonal braces under Monotonic and Cyclic Loads Arash Mostajeran Goortani Arash mostajeran@cv iut ac ir 09 June 2009 Department of Civil Engeenering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language Farsi Supervisor Dr Mohamad Mehdi saadatpour mmsaadatpour@cc iut ac irAbstractIn this study lateral behavior of light weight steel frame with diagonal braces undermonotonic and cyclic loads was investigated A numerous number of cold formed sheerpanels with different properties were modeled and analyzed by finite elements method Modeling was done with the aid of ABAQUS and implicit method At first the effect ofdifferent thicknesses and different yielding surfaces of panel members on lateral behavior wasstudied To reach this goal monotonic loading until displacement of 150mm and cyclingloading until relative lateral displacement of about 3 of higher track web of panel wasapplied The results of strength ductility and energy absorption for different panels arecompared Based on the results although using strong braces compared with other membersof panel narrowly increases strength of panel it lessened ductility and energy absorption ofsystem considerably On the contrary using strong sections for outer members of panel aswell as decreasing thickness and yield stress of braces improved panel ductility in somemodels to values higher than 10 and the panel over strength to value 1 26 This showsdesirable performance of panels In some other models effects of two kinds of stiffeners openings in shear panel using braces in two sides of panels and finally effect of vertical loadon lateral behavior of shear panel were investigated Generally using stiffeners postponedlocal buckling torsion and distortion of outer members of panel and increased energyabsorption of panel effectively Openings in shear panel causes instability and loaddeterioration in continuous cycles of Hysteresis loops loading Using braces in two faces ofpanel removes load eccentricity and its resultant torsion which minimizes damage of paneland increases energy absorption Applying vertical load on panel does not change thebehavior of panel under cyclic load considerably Key Words light weight steel frame cyclic loads finite elements method Hysteresis loops
