Roof s diaphragm rigidity of precast concrete double tee in long spans under seismic loading Farshad Jalili f jalili@cv iut ac ir May 06 2009 Department of Civil Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiM madhkhanM madhkhan@cc iut ac irAbstractThe main role of double tee diaphragms is to support gravity loads In addition theyare important elements to transfer lateral loads such as wind and earthquake tovertical lateral load resisting system Therefore diaphragms are the vertical part oflateral load resisting system Most frequently used methods for analysis and designof this system which are described in PCI design handbook are based on assumptionof rigid diaphragm behavior without consideration of behavior of connections Dueto assumption of rigid diaphragm DOF decreases and analysis becomes simpler Regard to this assumption all of the elements will do the same lateral displacement The greater in plane diaphragm deformation would lead to the greater error inanalysis results In this study dynamic behavior of precast building which those roof and floor arecovered by precast concrete double tee is investigated At experimental stage threekinds of mechanical connectors and topping concrete connector were tested in fullscale Based on the results of this stage a method for modeling of precast buildingis established by using of SAP 2000 software In current research the influence ofplan shape length to width ratio number of stories and type of connection betweendouble tee panels on diaphragm rigidity is studied Beside this the influence of in plane elastic deformation on the behavior of this type of building under seismicloading is investigated for determination of the error of in plane rigidityassumption The results showed that with the assumption of diaphragm rigidity fundamentalperiod will decrease and base shear force will increase In general due to an increasein plan length to width ratio and irregularity in plan shape the error of rigidityassumption of diaphragms will increase Increasing of number of stories and usingof topping concrete on double tee panels causes decrease of error as well Finally for rigidity or flexibility of diaphragms for investigated buildings is controlled bycode provisions
