Increasing Efficiency of Side Weirs Due to the Inlet Geometry Hojat Esmaili hojat halle@yahoo com April 25 2009 Department of Civil Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Farsi Abdorreza Kabiri Samani akabiri@cc iut ac ir Manuchehr Heidarpoor heidar@cc iut ac irAbstractThe side weir by definition is a fixed structure which is installed at one side or two sides of the main channel Whenwater surface elevation is raised to a specific level crest of side weir water overflows over the side weir and flowsinto the side canal Side weirs have been used extensively for water level control in irrigation and drainagecanal systems as a means of divdrting excess water into relief channels for flood protection works and asstorm overflows from urban sewage systems A complet analytical solution of the equations governing theflow in side weir channels is not possible and until quite recently approximate methods have been used based on experiments conducted over a limited range of the many variables involved In many cases theuse of such approximate methods has involved substantial errors in the calculated spill discharge In this study a comprehensive set of tests has been conducted on plane and labyrinth side weirs Also due to theuse of groups of piles and guide vanes the hydraulic conditions of side weir inflow were changed and resulted tobetter efficiency of these structures As the primery work in this research the flow hydraulic charasteristics forplane and labyrinth weirs have been studied for both cases of presence and absence of guide vanes and groupsof piles Finally the effects of guide vanes and groups of piles on flow discharge coefficent and water free surfaceprofiles are investigated Results show that due to the use of guide vanes and groups of piles the dischargecoefficeint of plane and labyrinth side weirs increses up to 30 percent and due to the use of these devices the flowdischarge of side weirs increses up to 45 percent Key Words Side Weir Discharge Coefficient Plane Weir Labyrinth Weir Guide Vane Groupsof Piles
