Meta Heuristic Optimization of Multi Reservoir Systems with Climatic Change Analysis Mansour Ganji mansourganji@cv iut ac ir 4 6 09 Department of Civil Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiKeyvan Asghari kasghari@cc iut ac irAbstractOptimal usage of water resources systems and increasing the efficient planning of water are ways to contendwith water scarcity The constantly increasing demand for a sufficient quantity and quality of water hasforced engineers and planners to contemplate and propose ever more comprehensive complex and ambitiousplans for water resources systems The application of systems methods such as optimization and simulation S O can significantly aid in the definition evaluation and selection of water resources investments designsand policies Optimization techniques are strategies to access desired choices in water resources investments In this research Harmony Search HS algorithm as a new meta heuristic optimization method is introducedand its applications to determine the operational rule curves from multi reservoirs systems under differentclimatic conditions is investigated The new HS meta heuristic algorithm was derived based on naturalmusical performance processes that occur when a musician searches for a better state of harmony Using thememory for determination of harmony vector simple mathematics and high speed calculation are the specialfeatures of HS The aims of this study are presenting the concepts of HS and examining its capabilities for multi reservoirsystems optimization together with consideration of climate variability for reservoirs operation using anintegrated S O model The performance of the model is investigated in three applications In the firstapplication the typical four reservoir problem is tested for validation of formulation In the secondapplication the operational rule curves of Zayandeh rud multi reservoir system using HS is determined Comparison of results with Genetic algorithm reveals better computational performances of HS Introducingan adaptive operational model under different climatic conditions is the third application In this application the impact of three different climatic conditions namely dry normal and wet periods on the operationalperformance was evaluated A real time hybrid model consisting of a data driven Support VectorClassification SVC method and Harmony Search algorithm is used to classify the periods and furthermorethe results implemented in period to period optimization for developing the operational rule curves Finallyperformance of proposed model and mean operational rule curve measured in the course of simulation ofoperation of system for a period with 25 years The proposed adaptive model can predict the optimal releasepolicy in more than 90 of the months during the simulation period The results from adaptive model alsoindicate less monthly deficit in dry and wet conditions when compared to mean rule curve model Key WordsReservoir Operation Optimization Harmony Search Support Vector Classification Climate Adaptive Model Zayandeh rud
