Optimization of Municipal Solid Waste Collection and Transportation Systems Case Study Shazand Iran Morteza Yaghoobi yaghobimor@gmail com July 10 2009 Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiM Sartaj m sartaj@cc iut ac ir AbstractCollection and transportation of municipal solid wastes MSW is one of the key functional elements inintegrated solid waste management which accounts for a considerable portion of the associated costs Nowadays increasing population specially in developing countries development of urbanization and advancement oftechnology and industries along with environmental awareness have made the collection and transportation ofMSW as one of the most challenging problems faced by municipal authorities and decision makers Review ofliterature shows that one of the important categories of vehicle routing problems in which demand points arelocated on the network arcs is the capacitated arc routing problem CARP In this research collection andtransportation of MSW is defined as a special kind of CARP It is called CARP with vehicle and site dependency CARP VSD which has two main differences with common CARP problems First the capacity of the collectionvehicles are not necessary the same Second a specific vehicle subject to physical conditions is not allowed toserve some of the streets and alleys In order to develop a model to solve this problem a combined method basedon geographic information system GIS was employed This combined method consisted of linear programmingmodel with integer variables for estimation of number and type of fleet vehicles and costs a mathematicalprogramming model to divide the study area into sub areas partitions and a heuristic model for vehicle routingin each partition Computer codes were developed using Matlab for vehicle routing and obtaining some of theinput parameters for partitioning Other computer coded were developed using Lingo for estimation of vehiclefleet and partitioning Capabilities of Arc GIS were employed to develop the network to analyze the network andto establish the input parameters for heuristic method The application of this combined method was investigatedby analysis of a case study The study area was Shazand city located in the south west of Markazi province Thiscity has a population of about 20000 people and average MSW production rate of 10000 kg per day Thecollection vehicle fleet consists of 3 different vehicles including a Maan 6 cubic meter and 1 service per day akhavar 5 cubic meter and 3 services per day and an Iveco 8 cubic meter and one service In order to assess theperformance of the model 3 scenarios were considered The first scenario was based on the existing system Thevehicle routing algorithm was employed for each zone associated with each vehicle Results of optimizationshowed a 3 percent reduction in time and 8 percent reduction in the total length compared to the existing system In the second scenario it was assumed that Khavar was not allowed to use the arcs with a width less than 8 metersand Iveco was not allowed to use the arcs with a width less than 12 meters Results of optimization showed a 16percent reduction in total costs and less geo spreading compared to the existing system In the third scenario itwas assumed that all vehicles are permitted to use all arcs Results showed an 18 percent reduction in total costscompared to existing system and 26 percent reduction in geo spreading compared to the second scenario Overall the results showed the capability and benefits of utilizing this combined model compared with traditional andempirical methods in different real and applied cases Key WordsCARP Municipal Solid Waste Collection and Transportation Systems GIS
