AbstractConcrete shear walls are the major systems resisting lateral loads due to earthquakes inhigh rise buildings Recently seismic design approaches have put more emphasis onlimiting the maximum structure drift during earthquake Shear walls have very large in plane stiffness and redistribute of the lateral loads from columns to wall that provide anexcellent drift control Nevertheless time expiring structural damages and early codeshortcomings harm efficiency of existing structural walls against earthquake FiberReinforced Polymer FRP materials have greatly been used in strengthening andretrofitting of structural elements in recent years The excellent features of FRP materialsSuch as very high tensile strength a high tensile modulus a low density and corrosionresistance set them the first alternative in the strengthening projects However a reviewon the previous studies shows that despite the squat walls very limited analytical and orexperimental studies have been conducted on the FRP strengthening of the slender RCshear walls under monotonic loading so far In this study the effect of FRP strengtheningand confinement of boundary elements in slender RC shear walls designed based on ACI America and ABA Iran concrete codes requirements on the overall behaviour ofboundary elements is investigated The finite element software is calibrated and verifiedusing available experimental data Nonlinear finite element analysis of reinforcedconcrete walls is performed using damage plasticity model and tension stiffening effects Then specimens designed by stress based and displacement based approaches werestudied in two sections boundary elements longitudinal strengthening application ofFRP sheets on the boundary elements lateral face parallel to the longitudinal steelreinforcement and transverse FRP confinement application of FRP jacket on theboundary elements Results show that the longitudinal strengthening plays a major roleon the wall load carrying while the transverse confinement has a major effect on the walldisplacement ductility Increasing in the number of FRP layers has a significant effect onthe wall behaviour Also results show that in the wall strengthening program it issufficient to emphasise to the boundary elements only in the plastic hinge exclusively This conclusion can be important in the ease and economy aspects of the strengtheningprojectKeywords Reinforced concrete shear wall finite element analysis damage plasticitymodel tension stiffening FRP strengthening confinement
