The Effect of Magnetized Water on Emitter Clogging and Uniformity of Distribution of Water in Trickle Irrigation Atiyeh Arab Atiye arab@yahoo com November 3 2009 Department of Irrigation and Drainage Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Language FarsiDegree M Sc B Mostafazadeh Fard behrouz @cc iut ac irM Heidarpour heidar@cc iut ac irAbstractIn recent decades due to limitations of available water resources for agricultural consumptionand grow of population the necessity of using pressurized irrigation systems especially trickleirrigation system have been increased To reclaim soil and water magnetized water can be used Magnetized water is produced by passing of water through a strong permanent magnet installedin or on a feed pipeline This study was performed at Gorgan Agricultural and Natural ResourcesResearch center in Gorgan province to investigate emitter clogging and uniformity ofdistribution of water in trickle irrigation Two main treatments of magnetic and non magneticirrigation water and three sub treatments of irrigation water salts including well water as control 200 ppm calcium carbonate and 400 ppm calcium carbonate were used The experiment wasperformed as a complete randomized block design with three replications The data for emitterdischarges were collected at five different times during the irrigation season and the data forwater properties Langelier Saturation Index were collected at three different times duringirrigation season including the beginning the middle and the end of the experiment The resultsshowed that the effect of type of irrigation water magnetic and non magnetic irrigation water onelectrical conductivity of irrigation water was significant at 1 probability level But the decreasein electrical conductivity of magnetic irrigation water was lower than the non magnetic irrigationwater For both magnetic and non magnetic irrigation water the salt contents decreased with timeduring the irrigation season but the decreases were not significant The effect of magneticirrigation water on Langelier Saturation Index LSI was significant at 5 probability level TheLSI for the magnetic water as compared to the non magnetic water was lower The averageemitter s discharges reduced with time during the irrigation season because of partial or completeclogging of some of the emitters For irrigation water with higher salt contents the decrease inemitter s discharges was higher The results indicated that type of irrigation water had significanteffect on average emitter s discharges at 5 probability level In each of the three irrigation watersalinity treatments for the beginning of the irrigation season the average emitter s dischargeswere lower for the magnetic water treatment as compared to the non magnetic water treatment For the end of the irrigation season the average emitter s discharges were higher for the magneticwater treatment as compared to the non magnetic water treatment The results showed that theemitter s discharges were lower at the lower end of the pipeline as compared to the upper end ofthe pipeline The magnetic water treatment had significant effect on emission uniformity ofemitters at 1 probability level At the beginning of the irrigation season the emission uniformitywas almost the same for both the magnetic water and the non magnetic water treatments But atthe end of the irrigation season the emission uniformity was higher for the magnetic watertreatment as compared to the non magnetic water treatment The results showed that irrigationwith magnetic water reduced the emitter s clogging and increased the emission uniformity Thechemical clogging of emitters increased with increase in pH of irrigation water and saltconcentration of water The emitter s clogging caused reduction in emitter discharge emissionuniformity absolute emission uniformity and the Christiansen s coefficients of uniformity andincrease in the manufacture s coefficient of variations of emitters Key words Trickle ir
