Salinity Effect on the Uptake and Translocation of Antimony on the Corn in Hydroponic Hoorieh Barangizi Email address h barangizi@ag iut ac ir Date of Submission 28 10 2009 Department of Soil Science Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor Prof Majid Afyuni Afyuni@cc iut ac ir AbstractAntimony Sb pollution has increased in recent years because of human activities andextensive usage of antimony compounds Only a few researches have been conducted inthis field in Iran The purpose of this research is to determine the plant uptake of Sb wasaffected by phosphorous and salinity This greenhouse research was performed inhydroponics A factorial experiment 3 2 3 with three Sb concentrations with andwithout P and three concentrations of NaCl in three replications was conducted After 40days plants were harvested and the roots and shoots were separated The concentrationsof Sb Fe and Zn and root permeability were measured Increasing Sb concentrations significantly reduced shoot weight In the presence of Sb shoot wet matter increased withphosphorous addition because of the positive effect of phosphorous Increasing Sbconcentration in the same level phosphorous plant with less dry matter were observed Antimony concentration in the plant shoots increased with increase in the salinity of thenutrient solution Increasing Sb concentration in nutrient solution resulted in itsenhancement in plant too But phosphorous had no significant effect on shoot Sbconcentration There was no significant difference in Fe concentration between species innutrient solutions with high Sb concentration The addition of Sb also increased shoot Feconcentration from 55 to 74 mg L 1 Root Fe concentration of blank phosphorous levelwas about 13 percent higher than 3 mg L 1 of phosphorous Increase in salinity resulted inhigher Zn concentration in shoots Roots with lower phosphorous level have higherpermeability and increasing phosphorous concentration had significant effect on rootpermeability The highest and lowest root permeability was related to blank Sb level and6 mg L 1 level of Sb respectively Increase of Sb concentration in nutrient solution firstreduced and then increased root permeability Root permeability also increasedsignificantly with increasing salinity level in nutrient solution Key WordsAntimony Phosphorous Salinity Root permeability
