Spatial Variability of Selected Heavy Metals in Some Surface Soils of Hamadan Province Marzieh Taghipour m taghipour@ag iut ac ir November 1 2009 Department of agriculture Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language FarsiHossein Khademi hkhademi@cc iut ac irShamsollah Ayoubi ayoubi@cc iut ac irAbstract Due to accumulation of heavy metals in soil and its risk to human health their recognition origin and distribution have attracted considerable interest in recent years No information iscurrently available on the distribution pattern of heavy metals concentration in soils of Hamadanprovince The purpose of this research was to determine the spatial variability of selected heavymetals in some surface soils of the Hamadan Province A total of 263 surface 0 10 cm soilsamples were collected to determine their total and plant bioavailable copper Cu nickel Ni lead Pb cadmium Cd and zinc Zn contents Also parent rock samples were collected toinvestigate the effect of parent material on the enrichment of selected elements in the soilsstudied Selected soil properties including pH electrical conductivity organic matter cationexchange capacity and texture were also determined to understand the relationships betweenheavy metal contents and soil properties The spatial variability of these variables was examinedby variogram models and kriging The results of geostatistical analysis showed that the sphericalmodel was the best model for describing the spatial variability of Pb Zn Ni and Cu The majorfactor controlling the total concentration of Cu Pb Zn and the plant bioavailable concentrationof Pb in the area appears to be land use Parent material analysis shows that the concentration ofNi and Cu in shale is much higher than that in any other parent rocks Therefore the content ofCu in the soils studied seems to be mainly controlled by soil parent material and land use Themajor factor controlling the total and bioavailable concentration of Ni in the area appears to beparent material Multivariate geostatistical analysis was performed to identify the source ofheavy metals Co Cr and Ni are associated with parent rocks and correspond to the first factortermed the lithologenic component The second factor was mainly attributed to Cu This elementwas also included in the first and third factors indicating a mixed source from both lithologicand anthropogenic inputs Zn and Pb seem to be related to the anthropogenic activities andcomprised the third factors A significant correlation was found between metals from thelithogenic sources and selected soil properties such as soil organic matter clay and CECindicating an interaction among them Generally Zn and Pb show a much less significantcorrelation with soil properties Distribution of measured metal concentrations showed that thelevels often exceed the guidelines established by the Netherlands Ni had the greatest number ofsites in excess of the Netherlands target value by 86 Likewise the concentration of Co Zn Pb and Cu exceeded the Netherlands guidelines in 5 3 5 2 7 and 0 7 of the study sites respectively Keyword Heavy metals spatial variability kriging multivariate analysis anthropogenicactivities lithogenic Hamadan
