814 Heavy metal removal in biosorption process by different morphologies of fungus Mucor indicus Vahid Javanbakht vjavanbakht@gmail com Date of Submission October 30 2009 Department of Chemical Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language farsiKeikhosro Karimi karimi@cc iut ac irAbstractThe heavy metals are presented in many industrial wastewaters and it is necessary toseparate them for further application or returning to natural water cycle Generally chemical and physical methods are efficient in removing the bulk of metal from solution athigh or moderate concentrations Biological methods of metal removal defined asbiosorption have been recommended as cheaper and more effective techniques forremoval of low concentration of heavy metals from wastewater In addition recovery ofmetal regeneration of the biomass no further nutrients necessity and operating capabilityin environmental conditions are among the other benefits of these techniques Inbiosorption processes microorganisms including algae fungi and bacteria use to removethe heavy metals even from very dilute solutions Application of pretreated biomass hasseveral advantages such as high biosorption capacity compared to the live biomass Lead aheavy and strategic metal widely available in industrial process waters Regarding theimportance of lead in industries and its high pollution in environment we focused on leadbiosorption from aqueous solution in this project The fungus Mucor indicus with yeastlike and filamentous growth was used for the biosorption in this work Mucor indicus isable to absorb the heavy metals since the cell wall of the fungus contains appreciated levelof chitin and chitosan Different morphologies of this dimorphic fungus was used andcompared for biosorption of lead The results showed the relatively high biosorptioncapacity of all morphologies for the heavy metal Different morphologies biosorptioncapacity of 22 07 15 62 14 68 and 12 12 mg g at pH 5 5 have been observed for puremycelium mostly mycelium pure yeast like and mostly yeast like morphology
