Effect of Structure Parameters The Needle Punched Non Wovens on Soil Reinforcement Hassan Esmaeili H Esmaeily@tx iut ac ir Date of Submission 10 2009 Department of Textile engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisors M Ghane m ghane@cc iut ac ir M Zarrehbini zarrebini@cc iut ac irAbstract Geosynthetics in general and needled non woven geotextiles in particular due to their technical and economicalmerits are widely used as soil reinforcement materials In this work needled geotextiles samples using staplepolypropylene fibers were manufactured The effect of variables such as fiber dimensions together with weightper unit area and punch density of the experimental samples on their shear resistance and strength whensubjected to vertical loading was investigated Single axis test method was employed to evaluate the abovemechanical properties In order to establish the properties of soil geotextile interface direct shear method wasemployed This allowed the determination of frictional resistance of the experimental samples to be made Results showed that the frictional resistance of geotextiles samples was increased when finer fibers were used Itwas also found that longer fibers caused the frictional resistance to be reduced Similar trend was observedwhen weight per unit area of the samples was increased Results of single axis test method vividly showed thatsoil strength was considerably improved when it was reinforced by the geotextile samples Key Words Geosynthetics Geotextiles polypropylene Needled Fiber single axis testmethod Frictional resistance
