Preparation of optical chemical sensors for determination of Mercury II Lead II Thallium III and Samarium III Masoud Fouladgar Fouladgar@ch iut ac ir November 18 2009 Department of Chemistry Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranSupervisor Ali A Ensafi Ensafi@cc iut ac ir Advisor Behzad Rezaei Rezaei@cc iut ac ir Department Graduate Coordinator Bijan NajafiAbstract New optical chemical sensors Optodes are introduced for determination of some cations One of them hasprepared by immobilization of a suitable ligand for Hg II on triacetyl cellulose The other optodes were preparedfrom PVC suitable ionophores and chromoionophores for determination of Hg II Pb II Tl III and Sm III The parameters involved in the preparation and determination of those cations were optimized The sensors wereused for determination of those cations in water and standard samples KeywordsOptical chemical sensor Optode Mercury II Thallium III Lead II Samarium III Introduction Optical chemical sensors provide simple and convenient tools for the on site monitoring of water in the environment and rapid screening industrial processes They allowfor simple detection of cations anions and some molecular compounds by naked eye or byportable spectrophotometer without any specific pretreatment Optical film sensors known as Optodes have been proposed for application in environmental monitoring There has beenconsiderable interest over the past decade in the determination of cations by optical chemicalsensors because of their ease of preparation and application low cost good selectivity andsensitivity However no optode has been made for detecting the cations of certain elements Optodes are used based on different analytical techniques such as absorbance 1 fluorescence 2 and reflectance 3 spectroscopic methods Most optodes are based on metal ion indicatorsthat form a complex with metal ions In some neutral ionophores are used accompanied by achromoionophore that is typically an H selective indicator 4 The diffusion of the cationsinto the membrane and the charge imbalance in the membrane cause chromoionophore torelease H and its color to change that of the deprotonated form In another method theabsorbance of its own complex is studied 5 Several methods are used for the immobilization of ion indicators in on the membranessuch as covalent attachment to a functionalized support 1 physical entrapment either in aporous polymer matrix or behind a selectively porous membrane 6 Ideally the immobilizedion indicator should not leak into the sample solution during the determination of the analyte
