117Decomposition of Total Factor Productivity Growth in Iran 1959 2007 Azadeh Bagheshahi a Bagheshahi@in iut ac ir Date of Submission 2009 21 12 Department of Industrial Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor Akbar Tavakoli PhD atavakoli@cc iut ac irAbstractThe total factor productivity TFP is an important measure to evaluate the level of countryproductivity The TFP level has been measured and analyzed by some researchers but still itsdecomposition to technical progress and efficiency changes remained unanswered Therefore themain objective of the study is to decompose total factor productivity growth into two maincomponents named technical progress and changes in technical efficiency for economy total factorproductivity The translog production function is used to measure and analyze total factorproductivity and estimate the level of inefficiency component beside the technical progress andefficiency changes The analysis and estimation cover a yearly data from 1959 to 2007 Theeconometric estimation method of maximum likelihood ML are applied to decompose TFP Decomposing the economy total factor productivity TFP the results show that even though theTFP growth has been growing over time but its level changed significantly in recent years However the level of technical efficiency has been growing for the entire period 1959 2007 Itis also observed that the major change of TFP growth is related to changes in technical efficiency When the period to two different periods and comparing the results it is found that the technicalprogress was negative over the period 1959 to 1988 but it changed positively during 1989 to 2007 Keywords Frontier Production Function Total Factor Productivity Technical Progress Technical Efficiency
