Application of EHD in enhancing mass transfer phenomena for separation of SO2 from a gas flow Ali Talebian ar talebian@ce iut ac ir 2009 08 08 Department of Chemical Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language FarsiArjomand Mehrabani Zeinabad supervisor Arjomand@cc iut ac irAbstract Polar pollutions such as sulfur dioxide are harmful to human life and environment Thereare different methods for removal of this material Recently a new method based onapplication of Electro Hydro Dynamic EHD was proposed In this thesis an experimentalsystem for assessment of EHD effect on removal decrease of SO2 from a gas flow wasdesigned and assembled Experimental results show that efficiency of SO2 removal dependson applied voltage flow rate of gas concentration of SO2 in gas flow and NaOHconcentration as chemical absorbent in liquid flow Applying of EHD enhances transfer rateof SO2 from gas phase to NaOH falling film and consequently increases the system masstransfer coefficient Results show that efficiency of the system on reduction of SO2 withoutapplication of EHD was 40 and the system efficiency by applying 15 KV to the systemwith SO2 concentration of 520 ppM gas flow rate of 10 lit Min and liquid absorption flowrate of 0 01 M3 Min Base condition was measured 74 4 Under base condition and onlyby increasing of gas flow rate to 20 lit Min the system efficiency was decreased to 62 5 Experimental results show system efficiency became 82 28 by application of 15 KV tosystem electrodes and when gas inlet flow rate was 10 lit Min and its SO2 concentration was2500 ppM and liquid absorption flow rate of 0 01 M3 Min Under base condition and onlywith decrease NaOH concentration in liquid absorption flow to 0 01 N the system efficiencydecrease to 54 Under base condition and only by decreasing of applied voltage to 12 KV the system efficiency was 68 5 and by decreasing of the applied voltage to 6 KV thesystem efficiency became 50 5 Key words SO2 Absorption EHD Plasma Reactor Polar Pollution
