Suitability Determination for Sheep in Rangeland of Ferydounshahr Isfahan Ebrahim gavili Email Address e gavili@na iut ac ir 3 10 2009 Department of Natural Resources Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 93111 IranDegree M Sc Language Farsi Dr Mohamadreza Vahabi Email Address vahabi@cc iut ac ir Dr Alireza Soffianian Email Address soffianian@cc iut ac irAbstractTo determine the rangeland suitability for permanent conservation we must regard capability andcapacity of the rangeland s ecosystem This research was conducted to recognize Sibak Sardabwatershed rangeland potentials evaluate and determine of suitability classes for sheep grazing use Inthis research we used the proposed method of FAO 1992 and for information layers crossing used ofGeographical Information System GIS In this research Sensitivity to erosion water resources andforage production are three basic components of this study We used the MPSIAC model for suitabilitydetermination from the sensitivity to erosion point of view The model of water resources suitabilityconsists of three parameters quantity quality and water resources accessibility In the forageproduction model we estimated the ratio of available forage to the whole produced forage in eachvegetation type According to erosion sensitivity criterion 86 17 of the rangeland is belongs to themedium suitability class S2 and remainder is belongs to low suitability class S3 From the qualityand quantity of the water resources viewpoint all of the rangelands were in a good suitability class S1 From the accessibility to water resources point of view 25 53 of the rangelands were in mediumsuitability class S2 2 81 at the unsuitable class N because of high slope and remainder at goodsuitability class S1 In the forage production model 96 of the rangeland was in low suitability class s3 and only 4 was in medium suitability class s2 The most important factors causing the decreasein suitability were the low rate of available forage for the livestock low forage production of classes I II low palatability percentage According to the livestock number 22170 animal units and 15989animal units capacity for grazing and also according to the high destruction because of heavy grazing using low consuming rate can help to improve the rangeland condition
