Development of In Situ Cast Aluminum Alumina Composite by Aluminothermic Reaction of Activated Aluminum Zinc Oxide Powder Ali Maleki maleki110@yahoo com January 2010 Department of Materials Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranSupervisor Prof M Meratian meratian@cc iut ac irSupervisor Prof B Niroumand behzn@cc iut ac irAdvisor Dr M Panjepour panjepour@cc iut ac irDepartment Graduate Program Coordinator Prof M ShamanianAbstractIn the present study in situ Al matrix composites containing alumina particles were synthesizedby a new method that involved injection of an activated powder mixture into the moltenaluminum The activated powder mixture was prepared by milling of aluminum and zinc oxidefor a predetermined time Milling for 60 minutes led to optimum activation of reactant powders Such activation caused a decrease in the reaction temperature from above 1000 C to 563 C Theresulting slurry was subsequently squeeze cast to minimize its porosity Microstructuralcharacterization studies revealed the formation of submicron size alumina particles with nearequiaxed morphology and good particle matrix interface The manuscript places particularemphasis on explaining the uniqueness of the processing methodology used in this study forsynthesis of in situ Al Al2O3 composites Key words Metal matrix composites MMCs In situ method Microstructures Casting IntroductionThe possibility of taking best advantage of metallic and ceramic materials characteristics haslong been the motivation behind the development of metal matrix composites MMCs 1 Metalmatrix composites can be synthesized using a number of processing routes among which thein situ method is well known due to its scientific innovativeness 2 In the in situ method reinforcement particles are synthesized in the matrix through one or more chemical reactions Considering the physical state of the matrix the in situ processing methods are categorized intosolid and liquid ones 1 Aluminum matrix composites with different reinforcements can be made via the in situ method In the case of Al Al2O3 composites two different liquid state methods are generally reported The first is by direct oxidation of molten aluminum alloy and the second is by reduction of ametallic oxide in the melt 3 The general term used for the substitution reaction which takesplace between aluminum and metallic oxides is aluminothermic reaction The reaction can bewritten as Department of Materials Engineering Isfahan University of Technology
