Mineralogical and Chemical Transformations of Selected K Bearing Minerals in Pistachio and Wheat Root Zone Seyed Javad Hosseinifard hosseinifard@yahoo com 2010 02 10 Department of Soil Science Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranH Khademi hkhademi@cc iut ac irM Kalbasi kalbasi@cc iut ac irA Jalalian A H Khoshgoftarmanesh College Graduate Coordinator F Nourbakhsh Soil Science Department College of Agriculture Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan IranAbstractThis investigation was carried out as four separate studies In the first study nonexchangeable K release from three micaceous minerals was investigated with sequentialextraction using different extracting solutions In the second and the third studies the effectof wheat and two pistachio cultivars on nonexchangeable K extraction from different types ofmicas and their transformation were examined In the fourth study changes of soil propertiesas well as different forms of K and related minerals were investigated Selected biotite phlogopite and muscovite were separated to 60 and 60 100 m size classes and saturatedwith calcium The highest values of cumulative K release were obtained by 0 01M HCl and1M NH4OAc for 60 and 60 100 m particle sizes respectively Furthermore coarserparticles released higher quantity of K as compared to that of finer particles Finer particles ofthree micaceous minerals were used in the second and the third studies Wheat and pistachioseeds were planted in a mixture of each mineral with sand sized quartz Growth period were50 and 100 days for wheat and 6 and 12 months for pistachio Two nutrient solutions complete and K free were used Results of the wheat experiment showed that biotite was thebest mineral in both growth periods and phlogopite and muscovite provided a better conditionin 150 day period XRD analysis revealed the transformation of biotite to vermiculite asaffected by wheat rhizosphere in 100 day period and phlogopite and muscovite in 150 dayperiod Growth of Badami Zarand Pistachio cultivar in K free growth media was in the orderof biotite phlogopite muscovite and in Sefidpesteh Nough cultivar in the order ofbiotite phlogopite muscovite Mica transformation to vermiculite happened only in thegrowth media treated with the K free nutrient solution Muscovite was not affected byBadami Zarand cultivar after 6 months In the fourth study pistachio orchards with threedifferent ages of 10 20 and 40 years old and adjacent virgin lands were selected in threedifferent regions in Rafsanjan area Soil properties and different potassium forms weredetermined Results indicated that pistachio plantation irrigation and orchards managementhave improved soil properties as compared to virgin lands whereas nonexchangeable K hasreduced even in 10 year old pistachio orchards Keywords Biotite Muscovite Phlogopite Pistachio Potassium Wheat
