Effect of Endophytic Fungi on Phytoremediation of Cadmium Arsenic and Petroleum Pollutants Mohsen Soleimani E mail address soleimani57@yahoo com February 22 2010 Department of Soil Science Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Supervisor Mohammad Ali Hajabbasi E mail address hajabbas@cc iut ac ir Supervisor Majid Afyuni E mail address afyuni@cc iut ac ir Advisor Farshid Nourbakhsh Advisor Aghafakhr Mirlohi Department Graduate Program Coordinator Farshid Nourbakhsh Department of Soil Science College of Agriculture Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan Iran Department of Agronomy and Plant Breeding Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan Iran Abstract Endophytic fungi are plant associations which may increase host plant tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses and therefore could enhance phytoremediation efficiency In this study the effects of two grass species Festuca arundinacea and Festuca pratensis infected E and non infected E by endophytic fungi Neotyphodium sp on cadmium Cd and arsenic As tolerance and accumulation and also degradation of petroleum hydrocarbons were investigated The plants were grown in a hydroponic system under different Cd and As concentrations for 6 weeks They were also grown in soil spiked with different concentrations of Cd and As 0 10 20 40 mg kg 1 for 2 months Plants were also grown in an oil contaminated soil for 7 months and unplanted soil considered as control At the end of the experiment Cd and As accumulation by root and shoot of plants biomass of root and shoot metal removal by plants transfer index of metal from root to shoot total and oil degrading bacteria dehydrogenase activity water soluble phenols total petroleum hydrocarbon TPHs and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon PAHs contents were measured in the soil The results demonstrated that E plants contained more root and shoot biomass than E plants in the presence of Cd and TPHs but there was no significant difference between E and E plants in the presence of As Endophyte infected plants had higher potential than endophyte free to accumulate Cd in root 6 16 and shoot 6 20 and also higher biomass production 12 42 in all treatments Transfer index of As in E plants was much lower than E plants Planting stimulated total and oil degrading bacterial numbers dehydrogenase activity and the soil content of water soluble phenols It was revealed that n alkanes with lower chain length C10 C25 and TPHs were more degraded in the rhizosphere of endophyte infected plants compared to non infected ones Grasses infected with endophytic fungi could be more efficient for removal of Cd and TPH from contaminated soils Keywords Soil Pollution Bioremediation Hyperaccumulator Festuca arundinacea Festuca pratensis
