Strong interaction effects on cascade transition dynamics of K p and K d atoms and calculation of cross sections of collisional transitions by Monte Carlo Method Morteza Raeisi Gahrouei Raiesi m@ph iut ac ir 1 February 2010 Department of Physics Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranSeyed Zafarollah Kalantari Supervisor 1 zafar@cc iut ac irMehdi Barezi Advisor Barezi@cc iut ac irMansour Haghighat Advisor Mansour@cc iut ac irAbstract In this thesis we present a new calculation of the cascade of K p and K d atoms by the MonteCarlo method Energy dependence of the collisional cascade processes is taken into account The x ray yields due to the radiative transition during the cascade are calculated as a functionof density We compare our results with the previous calculations by others and by KEK andDEAR experimental data for K p atoms It shows that two processes nuclear absorption andStark mixing have an important role in atomic cascades at high density targets 2p 0 105 0 002 meV is approximately suggested for the 2p strong interaction width of K patoms by fitting our results with existing experimental data In order to obtain the optimumdensity for measurement of the 1s strong interaction shift and width we have investigated thestopping power of kaons in the targets together with the x ray yields of kaonic hydrogen anddeuterium We have predicted the optimum range of the target density 0 03 0 06 of liquidhydrogen density LHD for K p atoms and 0 06 0 2 of LHD for K d atoms in aforthcoming SIDDHARTA experiment We have also investigated the kinetic energydistribution of K p atoms and the role of Coulomb transition on x ray yields Finally theDoppler broadening contribution on the measured width of x ray spectra are determined Inorder to study the strong interaction in low energies our results for x ray yields from K p andK p atoms can be compared with the forthcoming SIDDHARTA collaboration results In thesecond part of this thesis we have used the Classical Trajectory Monte Carlo CTMC methodto calculate the cross sections of the collisional cascade processes The calculations show afair agreement with the semiclassical results Key Word Exotic atoms kaonic atoms nuclear absorption atomic cascade dynamics x ray yields Monte Carlo method cross sections I Introduction When a heavy negative particle K enters a hydrogen isotope target an exotichydrogen atom is formed The particle may replace an atomic electron thus becomes bounded Department of Physics Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 8311
