Supervisor s Name and Email addressDr M Morshed Morshed@ cc iut ac irDr Y Mohammadi Mohamadi@ aut ac irAbstractIn recent years producing the yarn from nanofibers have been considered and several techniques have beendeveloped to produce it But so far study about production nano fibrous composite yarn with powder of naturalfibers such as wool hasn t been reported Polycarbonate PC is a thermoplastic polymer with a wide applicationsand has a good mechanical properties and biocompatibility Polycarbonate membrane with high special surfacearea has wide applications such as separation mambranes wound dressing materials sensors tissue engineering artificial blood vessels filtration and composite rainforcements etc In these applications we need to have acontinuous uniform and very fine diameter PC fibers electrospun To the best of production of continous anduniform electrospun polycarbonate nanofiber has not yet bean carried out systematically In this research wehave investigated the effect of several parameters such as solution concentration solvents mixture voltage viscosity solution conductivity surface tension solubility parameter and spinning distance on the morphologyof polycarbonate nanofiber The main purpose of this research was to improve fiber morphology by choosingthe best solvent In order to determine the range of concentration of polymer some electrospun mats withconcentrations of about 10 to 15 weight percent polycarbonate in methylene chloride MC voltage applied 25kV tip to target distances 12cm and the mass flow rate of 1 ml h were prepared Evaluation of voltagedetermined that increase in voltage will change fiber morphology and bead density and 20 kV voltage is suitablefor electorspining of polycarbonate solution When the viscosity and surface tension increased the fiberelongation became harder Wherease increase in dielectric and conductivity caused decrease in fibers diameter Studying the effect of different solvents showed that the MC is the most suitable solvent The effect of different solvent mixtures of MC and DMF were investigated to determine appropriate ratio ofsolvents The morphology of electrospun fibers was studied using scanning electron microscope SEM The results showed that the distance of 12cm was appropriate and therefore this distance was chosen as spinningdistance In this research the effect of solubility parameter on fiber morphology and viscosity were alsoinvestigated The results showed that the viscosity increases with increasing the difference between thesolubility parameters of the mixture solvents and polymer as a result of the electrospun fibers did not haveappropriate morphology The study of the surface tension of solutions showed that increasing surface tension ledto bead formation along the fibers Investigations of conductivity showed that this parameter decreases thenegative effect of viscosity and surface tension increase on fiber morphology Finally mechanical properties ofelectrospun polycarbonate nanofiber mats in different mixture of solvents were investigated The results ofinvestigations showed that highest strength and modulus belonged to the solvent mixture of 90 10 and 80 20 Key Words Polycarbonate Electrospinning Nanofiber Methylene Chloride Dimethylformamide Isfahan University of Technology Department of Textile Engineering An Investigatin on The Influence of Electrospinning Parameters on the Morphology of Polycarbonate Nanofiber
