82 Experimental study on removal of heavy metal ions from aqueous solution by poly vinyl alcohol coated Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles Marzieh Moradi Zaniani m moradi@ce iut ac ir Date of Submission 2010 03 16 Chemical Engineering Department Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Farsi Supervisor Ahmad Moheb Ahmad@cc iu ac ir S GholamRezaq Etemad Etemad@cc iut ac ir Abstract In this study nano size magnetic poly vinyl alcohol particles were synthesized as heavy metal adsorbent For this purpose glutaraldehyde was used as crosslinking agent The adsorbent could adsorb heavy metal ions because of O H and C O groups of poly vinyl alcohol and glutaraldehyde Effects of such parameters as order of adding materials stirring during coating stage amount of magnetite and percentage of crosslinking were examined on the size of particles Characterization of the magnetic nanoparticles showed that the smallest particles were obtained by using 100 mg magnetite and 90 crosslinking that in the coating stage acid poly inyl alcohol and glutaraldehyde were added to the reaction media simultaneously with stirring After characterization of adsorbent adsorption of Cu2 and Pb2 ions were evaluated and also effects of contact time pH temperature crosslinking percentage of the adsorbent and the initial concentration of the ions were examined The results showed a rapid adsorption with greater adsorption capacity compared with that of uncoated nano magnetic particles for both ions The maximum adsorption was obtained at 25oC during 10 minutes by using 50 crosslinked adsorbent at pH of 5 and 6 5 for Cu2 and Pb2 ions respectively The adsorption kinetics study of the systems showed that adsorption of both ions followed the pseudo second order mechanism and chemical sorption was the rate limiting step of the adsorption process The best interpretation for the equilibrium data was given by Langmuir isotherm and the maximum adsorption capacities were 11 06 mg g and 9 85 mg g for Cu2 and Pb2 ions respectively Keywords Nano magnetic adsorbent Poly vinyl alcohol Glutaraldehyde Heavy metals
