Corrosion behavior of WC FeAl B composites in aqueous media Mojtaba Habibi Rad m habibirad@ma iut ac ir Department of Materials Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor Professor Mohammad Ali Golozar Doctor Mehdi AhmadianAbstractWC Co hardmetals are used for their combined high hardness and toughness However their poor corrosion resistance in aqueous solutions reduces the spectrum of theirapplication The hardness and wear resistance of WC FeAl B composites are much higherthan WC Co hardmetals and their toughness is comparable to toughness of WC Cocomposites The goal of thesis was a systematic investigation of the corrosionmechanisms of the WC FeAl B composites with electrochemical methods and analyticalchemistry solution analysis characterization WC FeAl B and FeAl B were investigatedby electrochemical impedance spectroscopy potentiodynamic polarization andinductively coupled plasma spectroscopy ICP The solution pH dominates the effect ofspecific ions In neutral and acidic solution the corrosion process of WC FeAl Bcomposites consists mainly of binder phase dissolution At alkaline pH WC dissolutionbecomes more significant Synergistic effects due to galvanic coupling between the FeAl B binder and WC are accelerating binder dissolution and hindering WC dissolution in thecomposites comparing to the pure compounds Keywords WC FeAl B EIS Polarization ICP
