Change Detection of Birds Main Habitats of Gavkhooni Wetland from 1976 to 2008 Roohollah Kazemi Najafabadi Kazemiroohollah@yahoo com March 14 2010 Department of Natural Resources Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Farsi Alireza Soffianian Assist Prof Supervisor soffianian@cc iut ac ir Mahmoodreza Hemami Assist Prof Supervisor mrhemami@cc iut ac ir Abstract Gavkhooni wetland is one of twenty two registered Ramsar convention sites within Iran and is considered as one of the most important places for wintering and breeding birds in central Iran Due to the human interferences such as making barriers water transition plans and land use alteration around the wetland Gavkhooni wetland has vastly been changed Successful management of the wetland demands for the knowledge on the effects of human interferences on the wetland ecosystem The aim of this study was to investigate the changes occurred on the bird s habitats of Gavkhooni wetland over the recent 35 years We used images of MSS TM ETM and LISS III sensors captured in the growth season of the wetland in years 1976 1990 1999 and 2008 To extract land cover maps of the area density slicing and mathematical operation methods were used after necessary preprocessing such as geometric and radiometric correction To classify vegetation cover supervised classification method was employed by selecting training samples of reed bed shrubbery and bush Vegetation cover was divided into two layers of thin and dense based on relationship between percentage cover and RVI vegetation index As the percentage cover of reed bed and shrubs was considerably higher than the sparsely distributed bushes Boolean method was used to determine the bird s habitat classes The richness and abundance of bird species in each habitat class were determined by conducting fieldwork in both winter and summer seasons Total accuracy of the land cover maps were assessed by error matrix which was varying from 80 to 86 percent All classes which were not considered as bird s habitats were merged and they were appointed as none habitat class The non habitat class accompanied with previous three classes and river and water mass was chosen as final bird s habitat maps for years 1976 1990 1999 and 2008 We used post classification method to assess the changes between years 1976 1990 1990 1999 1999 2088 and 1976 2008 The most important detected change was severe reduction of water mass and its turning to none habitat areas during 1976 1990 The declining trend of water mass continued during 1990 to 1999 and at the end of this period the residual water mass was disappeared In contrast from 1999 to 2008 changing of none habitat area to other habitats especially bush and water mass was visible Considering the whole period 1976 2008 a 95 4 reduction in water mass was detectable The effects of Habitat changes especially reduction of water mass during these periods on birds groups populations are discussed Keywords Ramsar convention change detection vegetation index habitat maps
