Zonation of heavy metal polluted soils in Hamedan region Elaheh Mousavi Email Address ela6280@yahoo com 14 03 2010 Department of Natural Resources Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 93111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Persian Dr Alireza Soffianian Email Address soffianian@cc iut ac ir Abstract Pedospher is an important concentration center for pollutants including exhaust gases fromvehicles industrial wastes the sedimentation of dust and suspended substances in the atmosphere the combustion of coal and the sedimentation of other pollutants The main soil contaminantsinclude heavy metals acid precipitation and organic components Heavy metals are moreconsidered due to irresolvable high toxicity carcinogenesis and cumulative effects The purpose of this research was to determine the spatial distribution of As Sb Cu and Cr calculate the geochemical background and contamination factor in surface soils of Hamadanprovince Using classified random systematic sampling 286 surface soils 0 20 cm samples in theregion area 19547 square kilometers were collected and total heavy metals concentrations soilcharacteristics including pH organic matter clay silt and sand percentage were measured Thegeostatistics and geographic information system GIS techniques were applied and the ordinarykriging inverse distance weight and radial basic function methods were used to map the spatialpatterns of four heavy metals The results of this methods were compared using the Jack knifetechnique and identified kriging method for generating spatial distribution maps For metalcontamination probability maps spatial structure variables and the variogram validity for selectedheavy metals were investigated and ultimately the best model and the most suitable interpolationmethod were selected Geochemical background calculated for each geology using the median andindex of geochemical distribution Contamination factor and index of geoaccumulation werecalculated using results of index of geochemical distribution Sb Cu and Cr were fitted to the exponential model and As was fitted to the spherical model The results of this study indicated that selected heavy metals have parent material origin andagricultural activities contributed to accumulation of As Cu and Cr in agricultural land Also studyof spatial distribution of heavy metals showed that the highest concentration of heavy metals in thesoils of studied region corresponds to sandstone limestone shale metamorphic and igneous bedrocks Key words Heavy metals Spatial distribution Index of geochemical distribution Contaminationfactor Index of geoaccumulation Hamadan
