Design Development and Evaluation of a Harvesting Head for Sugarcane Leaves and Tops Mohsen Hajheidary m hajheidary@yahoo com March 15 2010 Department of Agriculture Machinery Engineering Isfahan University of Technology 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiJalil Razavi Jrazavi@cc iut ac irAbstract In Khuzestan Province over 60 000 ha of land are under sugarcane plantations Considering 20 of the total product as leaves and tops the weight of these residueswas estimated one million metric tons in 2006 In most countries of the world suitablefor sugarcane production such as Brazil India and even Iran these residues are burnedthat contribute to environmental pollution and cause organic material loss Theseresidues could be used as livestock feed stuff or as biofuel energy required in sugarcaneindustry Existence of these residues on land is an obstacle for irrigation and makesother problems Regarding to high mass and physical properties of these residuesmachines used for harvesting these residues has not shown suitable performance Therefore a different pick up head was designed and developed to harvest residuesfrom the soil surface in an active mode This head consists of two metal rollers Aftervarious parts were designed based on mechanical engineering design practices andconsidering proper safety factor and standard parts machine was developed Fabricationof the head was done at the Farm Machinery Department workshop and was evaluatedon stationary test rig equipped with a channel similar to furrow of sugar cane fields forfield simulation With test rig belt in motion residues were traveling toward pick uprollers and with rollers reverse rotation were picked up from test rig belt To varymaterial travel on the belt and also rotational speed of the rollers two electronicinvertors were used in connection with two electric motors used separately for the beltand rollers in the power train system Parameters of the study consisted of travelingspeed or test rig speed with three levels 2 5 3 5 and 5 km h ratio of linear speed ofrollers and forward speed with three levels 1 1 25 and 1 5 and rotational speed ratiobetween two rollers with three levels equal higher speed for upper roller and higherspeed for lower roller with three replications within a completely randomized designResults indicated that increase in upper roller speed contributes significantly to lowerresidue harvesting With traveling speed increased residues harvesting also significantlydecreased and highest level of harvesting was obtained at 2 5 km h 1 test rig speed Comparing ratio between traveling and roller speed least residues harvesting wasobserved with 1 5 ratio that was significantly lesser than 1 and 1 25 ratio But In regardsto being significant interaction effect highest residue harvesting was obtained withequal speed ratio between two rollers rollers rotational speed ratio of 1 and test rigspeed of 3 5 km h 1 which was 90 Keywords Sugarcane residues sugarcane leaves and tops residues harvesting residues burning
