Synthesis and Characterization of H2Me2bqb amide ligand by ionic liquids and preparation of its complexes with Ni II Cu II and Co III Fahimeh Zamani F Zamani@ch iut ac ir Date of Submission 17 1 2010 Department of chemistry Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor Prof M Amirnasr Email amirnasr@cc iut ac ir Abstract The favorable characteristics of ionic liquids make them promising substitutes for classic solvents forcarrying out reactions according the principles of green chemistry in several fields including coordinationchemistry The use of greener reaction media or solvent free conditions are effective and sustainabletechniques to reduce chemical waste reaction time and efficiency in organic and inorganic synthesis The coordinative sites of bispyrydilamide ligand are composed of amide nitrogens as donor and pyridinenitrogens as donor and acceptor atoms The deprotonated amide is a strong donor capable of stabilizingearly as well as late metal ions in high oxidation states making high valent metal complexes of the ligandssuitable as Lewis acid catalysts enzyme model or other applications The electronic properties andstabilization of the desired oxidation state of a metal ion can conveniently be modified by choosing suitablediamines or using quinaldic acid derivates with suitable substituents In this project the synthesis of the ligand H2Me2bqb with ionic liquid TBAB as reaction media andcatalyst and its complexes I V with possible bio and electro or photochemical applications have beendiscussed I Ni Me2bqb III N n Bu 4 Co Me2bqb N3 2 II Cu Me2bqb IV N n Bu 4 Co Me2bqb CN 2 V N n Bu 4 Co Me2bqb SCN 2 The two methyl group on benzene ring in the structure of H2Me2bqb as compared with H2bqb H2Mebqband H2cbqb leads to different properties such as solubility electrochemical behavior and spectralcharacteristics Ni II and Co III compounds The H2Me2bqb and its complexes were characterized by UV Vis FT IR 1HNMR and elemental analysis NiMe2bqb was structurally characterized by X Ray Diffraction The electrochemical properties of ligand andcomplexes I III IV and V were also investigated by cyclic voltammetry and the trend in the observedredox potential was rationalized considering the axial ligand properties and the structure of the equatorialligand on the redox potential of these complexes The steric demands of the ligand led to the formation of Ni Me2bqb with a distorted square planarstructure Due to the steric hindrance imposed by the H2Me2bqb ligand the structure of Co III complexes isalso distorted octahedral Keywords Ioinc liquid cyclic voltammetry Co III complexes TBAB distorted octahedral efficiency
