Investigation of novel nanostructure Pt C catalyst modified by polyaniline nanofibers for direct methanol fuel cell application Jalal Jalili March 8 2010 Department of Chemistry Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Lanquage FarsiSupervisers Behzad Rezaei and Mohammad ZhianiEmail Rezaei@cc iut ac ir M Zhiani@cc iut ac irAbstract In the present study in order to achieve an inexpensive tolerable anode catalyst fordirect methanol fuel cell applications a composite of polyaniline PANI Nano fibers and Pt CNano particles indicated by PANI Pt C was prepared by in situ electropolymerization ofaniline and trifluoromethane sulfonic acid on the glassy carbon The effect of synthesizedPANI nanofibers in methanol electrooxidation reaction was compared by bare Pt C bydifferent electrochemical methods such as cyclic voltammetry CV electrochemicalimpedance spectroscopy EIS and chronoamperometry Scanning electron microscopy SEM was also employed to observe the morphology of the modified catalyst layer The test resultsreveal that introduction of PANI Nanofibers within catalyst layer improve the catalyst activityin methanol oxidation hinder and prevent catalyst from more poisoning by intermediateproducts of methanol oxidation and improve the mechanical properties of the catalystlayer SEM images are also indicate that Porous PANI Nano fibers make good electricaljuctions between platinum particles and anchor platinum particles and alleviate the Ptmigration during methanol electrooxidation Keywords Methanol electro oxidation Pt C Nano particle Polyaniline Nano fibers DirectMethanol Fuel Cell
