Isfahan University of Technology Department of Civil Engineering Development of a Performance Based Seismic design Approach considering Soil Structure Interaction By Mohamad Mahdi Zafarani Supervisor Dr Amir M Halabian Abstract Although the newly developed performance based seismic analysis approaches made significant contribution to improve the prediction of structural damages associated with a given level of earthquake however none of the current invariant force distributions employed in these approaches considers the effect of foundation flexibility For a structure supporting on flexible foundation it was understood the structural response could be beneficially or detrimentally affected by a phenomenon referred as Soil Structure Interaction This effect has been taken into account in pushover analysis of SDOF systems supporting on flexible foundations but MDOF structures are less investigated The modal pushover analysis method MPA is generally recognized as a useful method for estimating the dynamic response of classical damping fixed supported structures This research aims to extent the modal analysis approach to be applied for MDOF structures supporting on flexible foundations The foundation flexibility introduces an additional damping to the system resulting that the assumption of classical damping for soil structure system is not valid anymore Employing the complex modal superposition concept a new modal pushover analysis procedure was developed to take into account the inherent non classically foundation damping This method retains the conceptual simplicity and computational attractiveness of the current procedures having the modal invariant force distributions modified accounting for SSI To examine the applicability of CMPA a set of 5 10 and 20 storey generic frame models supporting on flexible foundations were used The nonlinear behavior of beam elements are modeled using the moment curvature relations while for columns multi axial spring model based on material stress strain relation called fiber model is employed to represent the non linear interaction behavior of tension compression axial forces and bending moments The soil structure system is subjected to a number of ordinary and near fault ground motions The differences among fixed base and flexible base responses have been compared in terms of drift storey ratios Key Words soil structure interaction complex modal pushover force distribution pattern
