123Water Quality Indices and the Concentration of Selected Heavy Metals in Bed Sediments of Zayandehroud River Azam Teimouri Jervekani azamteimoori@yahoo com May 05 2010 Department of Water Engineering College of Agriculture Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 Iran Degree M Sc Language FarsiJahangir Abedi Koupai koupai@cc iut ac irAbstractRivers are the water resources to provide the largest water demand in different sectors drinking water industry and agriculture then the evaluation parameters of water quality is very important in themanagement of water resources Heavy metals are the most important pollutants in surface waterresources The presence of heavy metals in rivers due to discharge of municipal industrial andagricultural wastewater may lead to the presence of heavy metals in plants animals and finally in thehuman food chain One of the objective of this study was the investigation of heavy metals in sedimentsof the Zayandehroud river bed Therefore samples of sediments along the upstream of Zayandehroudriver bed were taken for three consecutive months at four sampling stations Zayandehroud regulatordam Zamankhan Bridge kalleh Bridge and Nekouabad dam and analyzed for the availability of Pb Cu Cd Co Cr and Ni metals by atomic absorption In addition the organic carbon in bed river sedimentsamples and some parameters of water quality temperature pH EC DO and suspended solids weremeasured by standard methods The results indicate that the maximum amount of heavy metals is linkedto Ni in Zamankhan stationan Bridge and the minimum is related to Cd The average of heavy metals inbed sediments at the different stations are as follows Zayandehroud regulator dam Ni Pb Cr Cu Co CdZamankhan Bridge Ni Cr Cu Pb Co Cdkalleh Bridge Ni Cr Cu Pb Co CdNekouabad dam Pb Ni Cr Cu Co CdThere is also a strong correlation between Pb concentration and organic carbon in bed sediments Various water quality index WQI used to measure the quality of surface waters including standarddiagrams of water quality index subjective water quality index and Canadian water quality index Theindices of water quality were determined from upstream to downstream in nine stations Zayandehroudregulator dam Zamankhan Bridge Cham Aseman kalleh Bridge Dizicheh Leng Mousian ChoumBridge and Varzaneh The results indicate that the amounts of these three indices decreased fromupstream to downstream which is due to the discharge of municipal industrial and agriculturalwastewater into river Typically Zayandehroud regulator dam and Choum Bridge had the best and lowestwater quality respectively The using of mathematical models is necessary to determine the reaction of river to the pollutants MIKE11 is a one dimensional mathematical model to simulate the heavy metals in water solution attached inthe suspended solids and in the river bed sediments Due to lack of possibility of measuring theseparameters for all heavy metals model was calibrated only for Pb Key words Zayendehroud Heavy Metals Bed Sediment Water Quality Index MIKE11
