Investigation of strength in double layered fabrics edge using a mechanical model Hamid Reza Elahidoust hr elahidoust@tx iut ac ir Date of Submission 06 02 2010 Department of Textile Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Farsi Supervisors Mohammad Sheikhzadeh m sh110@cc iut ac ir Saeed Ajeli Sajeli@cc iut ac ir Abstract One of the most applicational industrial fabrics is double layered fabrics which are fastened together only in margins Regarding the special applications of these fabrics their strength is very important Because the seam of fabrics has the least strength in comparison to other points of the fabric the strength of seam of industrial double layered fabrics in the matter of importance In this thesis a new method has been introduced in order to increase the strength of seam in double layered fabrics In this method a tube is formed in the joint place of two layers and a filler with circular section is placed in it In this research three fabrics having tubes with diameters 0 27 0 45 and 0 55 cm were produced and each one was filled with fillers with two different diameters The smaller filler was used as half filler or semi filler and the larger filler diameter was used as a complete filler The strength of these samples was compared to the fabrics with tube and without filler the fabric without tube in which the two layers are weaved together in margins and double layered sewed fabric and one layered fabric At last the strongest samples were modeled using Finite Element Method ABAQUS software and the ability of models to predict the strength of similar seams was studied The results showed that filling the holes with fillers and increasing the diameter of fillers causes the tensile strength of seams to increase Results also showed that increasing the diameter of holes for the samples which are filled with complete fillers doesn t affect the tensile strength of seams Comparing the measured tensile strength and the ones resulted from modeling with ABAQUS for samples having tubes filled with perfect filler and the sample without tube showed that these models can predict the tensile strength of similar samples with maximum error of 15 Key Words double layered fabrics Finite Element Method tensile strength of seams Endless Fabric with tube
