Earth Pressure Distribution on Braced Excavation Walls A Amirrajab a amirrajab@cv iut ac ir 18 April 2010 Department of Civil Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc language EnglishS Hamid Hashemolhosseini Hamid@cc iut ac irBehrooz Koosha cgkoosha@cc iut ac irAmir M Halabian Mahdi@cc iut ac irAbstract The construction of basement in urban areas e g metro railway or building consisting ofmany basement levels often involves excavation with vertical walls that are usually supportedwith internal struts Although Rankine and coulomb earth pressure theories are used to designthese members classically multi level braced excavations tend to experience more complexearth pressures Peck based on a series of case studies conducted in strutted excavations in theChicago metropolitan area showed that measured maximum bracing reactions did not behaveas active or at rest earth pressure theory would predict He also emphasized that upper strutsare more heavily loaded than what active theory would predict and lower level struts are lessloaded compared to active pressures Despite that the Peck theory is widely used for practicalproblems other numerical and experimental studies have been conducted to to assess apparentearth pressure These apparent earth pressure distributions are only envelops to estimate loadsof struts and are not real earth pressure applied to wall because loads of struts are assessed byfield measurements or numerical methods then distributed on the wall by back calculation Onthe other hand these researches are case studies and conducted for an excavation with specialproperties For example in Peck s studies the excavation was supported by sheet pile walls The aim of this parametric study is to assess the real earth pressure applied to the soldier piles Corresponding to researches carried out in recent fifty years measured loads of struts arenot only induced by earth pressure but are due to ambient air temperature increasing as well Without appropriate consideration of thermal effects measured loads may be misinterpretedsolely as loads from the retained earth or design loads based only on computer analyses maynot be representative of potential loading conditions This study predicts thermal load inducedin the struts due to temperature variation by thermal analyses Numerical program used in thisstudy is finite difference code FLAC3D using elastic perfectly plastic Mohr Coulomb modelfor sandy soils and Cam Clay model for clay Soil behavior was modeled by constitutiverelations developed by Maleki et al as well and results are compared with Mohr Coulomb andCam Clay models Some features such as strut stiffness depth of excavation distance betweenpiles and depth of embedment of pile below excavation bottom are studied and lateral earthpressure diagrams are presented Keywords lateral earth pressure braced excavation struts
