Abstract The present study was conducted to evaluate the effect of tomato pomace on performance egg quality and some blood parameters of laying hens Experiment was carried out in a completely randomized design with 5 treatments and 5 pen replicates of four hens each During two consequtive months 100 white leghorn hens Hy Line W 36 at 40 weeks of age were fed with the diets containing 0 6 9 12 or 15 tomato pomace Using different levels of tomato pomace in the diets did not have any significant effect on performance traits mean egg weight egg production rate egg mass daily feed intake and feed conversion ratio On the other hand incremental levels of tomato pomace 6 9 12 and 15 had a positive effect on yolk color index Dietary inclusion of tomato pomace in comparison with control group had a statistically significant effect on yolk color in both experimental periods p 0 05 The single degree of freedom contrast control diet versus diets containing tomato pomace showed that tomato pomace in the levels of 6 to 15 percent in the diet can improvement the level of egg yolks triglycerides tested in the second period and significantly reduced the amount of triglycerides of hen eggs fed by tomato pulp Presentment tomato pomace diets did not indicate a significant effect on cholesterol content of egg yolks Addition of these levels of tomato pomace did not indicate statistically significant effect on the other parameters of egg quality such as egg shell thickness shell breaking strength Haugh unit and yolk weight and index Contrast comparisons showed that tomato pomace was the reason for cholesterol and triglycerides reductions in blood serum of laying hens during the first period of experiment whereas for these amounts of tomato pomace had no significant effect on serum HDL In the second period of the experiment the serum LDL levels showed a significant reduction p 0 05 in hens fed on tomato pomace diets compared with control group Based on the present results inclusion of 9 percent of tomato pomace to the laying hens diet could have some positive effects on egg quality and blood parameters of laying hens In addition using tomato pomace in the diet of laying hens could minimize some of the environmental concerns about tomato wastes Key words Laying hen Tomato pomace Egg quality Performance Egg yolk Triglycerides and Cholesterol
