Stress Displacement analysis of underground openings in the case of asymmetrical water pressure Case study Karun 4 dam Mehdi Rahmani M rahmani@mi iut ac ir 7 June 2010 Department of Mining Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Farsi Supervisor Masoud Cheraghi Cheraghi@cc iut ac ir Abstract Karun 4 powerhouse dam project is constructed to produce over 2000 million kwh electricity in a year and adjusting water Karun river yearly also control the great floods The position of this concrete dam is located in Charmahal Bakhtiari province about 180 km from southeastern of Shahrekord city which is situated about 4 km below the intersection of Armand and Bazoft river Hence the location of dam is situated in upper part of this big river that is 4 km at the beginning of Karun river By constructing this project all the dams are completed aside each other to control great floods of Karun river Karun 4 dam is concrete arch type two arch The total capacity of this dam is 2190 million cubic meter The area of dam reservoir is 29 23 square meter with 24 km length The crown length is 440 m with width of 7 m in crown and 37 to 55 m in foundation also crown level and normal level are 1032m 1025 m respectively The altitude of the body dam from foundation is 230 m According to location of Karun 4 dam this dam is highest also from body view among the dams in Iran To prevent the water seepage from existing joints fractures discontinuities in abutments and foundations of Karun 4 Dam the grout curtain in both sides was designed and done with 10 grouting galleries in different levels The mentioned galleries are excavated as follows LG1 to LG5 are galleries in left abutment at levels 1032 974 932 890 840 and in right abutments at levels 1032 998 932 980 848 in order The galleries are loaded under special conditions due to overburden and water pressure towards grout curtain during and after supplying water in reservoir according to efficient parameters of grout curtain Due to location of gallery and grout curtain the flow of passing water from grout curtain led to asymmetrical distribution of water pressure around the gallery Thus the stability analysis of final concrete lining at grout galleries corresponding to this type of loading is interested Also magnitude of stresses due to passing water through watertight curtain is dependent on parameters such as permeability of grout curtain reservoir head
