99 Effect of Different Priming Methods on Germination Indices of Sunflower And Response of Selected Primed Seed to Different Irrigation Regimes in the Field Pezhman Nikneshan pejmannikneshan@yahoo com submitted in August 2010 Department of Agronomy and Plant Breedin Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiK Razmjoo Assoc Prof supervisor Krajmjoo@cc iut ac irH Karim mojeni Assis Prof supervisor kmojeni@cc iut ac irAbstractDrought stress is one of the most important limiting factors in crop production Priming is one oftechniques for improving seed germination increasing stress tolerance and seedling establishmentunder low moisture conditions A laboratory experiment was conducted to evaluate effects ofdifferent primings agents and duration on sesame seed A factorial experiment base on completelyrandomized design CRD with three replication were conducted in the seed science laboratory ofCollege of Agriculture Isfahan University in 2009 In this experiment nine seed treatments control 2 5 10 and 15 bar poly ethylene glycol 0 3 1 and 2 molar NaCl and hydroprimingwith distilled water were as first factor and five treatment periods consist 4 12 16 24 and 48hour were as second factor Germination percentage germination rate radicle and shoot lengthand dry weight were measured Osmotic potential treatments with PEG solution in low level andhydropriming with different duration enhanced percentage and rate of germination radicle andshoot lengths and dry weight in comparison with control and halopriming with high concentrationof NaCl Osmopriming for 24 hour was the best among the other primings therefore it wasselected for field experiment was conducted at the Agricultural Research Farm of IsfahanUniversity of Technology in 2009 to evaluate treatment and different irrigation regimes onexperiment sunflower In field main plot consisted of four irrigation regimes 75 100 120 and 150mm cumulative evaporation from class A pan and sub plot consisted of two seed treatment Osmopriming and control The duration from planting to seedling and 50 heading growth stagewere significantly shorter in osmopriming than in control The level of soil moisture effectedduration on 50 heading growth stage Plant height plant dry matter grain yield and oil yieldwere reduced as the level of soil moisture decreased Regardless of the level of soil moisture grainyield was enhenced 8 7 by osmopriming The grain yield was more at higher level of soilmoisture The oil yield were high in osmopriming compared to control The oil yield decreased asthe level of soil moisture reduced The results showed that osmopriming enhanced seedgermination and seedling growth growth under lab condition and increased emergence and cropyield and quality while drought stress decreased seedling plant growth and quality Keywords priming sunflower seed yield protein and oil yield
