95 Combustion synthesis of Fe3Al TiC Composite Majid Zarezadeh Mehrizi majidzzm@ma iut ac ir 4 20 2010 Department of Materials Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 8415683111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiProfessor Ali Saidi a saidi@cc iut ac irAbstractThe aim of this work was production of Fe3Al TiC composite by combustion synthesiswith ferrotitanium graphite and aluminum powders Also we investigated effect ofdifferent parameter on combustion synthesis characteristics and combustion synthesismechanism by Combustion Front Quenching Method CFQM and thermal analysis Themicrostructural evolution during combustion synthesis was analyzed by SEM The phaseconstituents of the product were evaluated by X ray diffraction Result showed that themixture with the lower aluminum content gave out a higher combustion temperature andlower ignition temperature Depending on the Al content different aluminides formed asphases of matrix CFQM result showed that at first Al powders melted at 933K andsurrounded FeTi2 particles and carbon powders When the temperature increased to 1358K FeTi2 melted and Al and C dissolved in Fe and Ti Then solid liquid and liquid liquidreactions took place and TiC and Fe3Al formed Based on these results a ternary solution precipitation model was proposed for combustion synthesis of Fe3Al TiC compositepowders Thermal analysis result showed that no trace of TiAlx x 1 3 was formed in allsamples and the reaction of Ti Fe Al C system took place in the following two steps first molten Al and Fe reacted exothermically to form Fe Al intermetallic compound Second the produced heat melted the ferrotitanium with lower Fe content and resulted in aliquid containing Ti Fe Al and C Key WordsIntermetallics Titanium Carbide Fe3Al TiC Composite Combustion Synthesis
