Some Ecological Characteristics of Zygophyllum atriplicoides in Some Semi Arid Lands in Isfahan Province Azam Mohamadi3 a mohamadi@na iut ac ir March 2011 Department of Natural Resources Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83 111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Farsi Abstract One of the most important issues for managing rangelands in arid and semi arid areas is poviding the comperhensive information about key species and its habitata requirements ineffectual management due to inadequate information regarding the plants of thes areas Each plant species in its habitat has an close relation with the living and non living factors and any changes in them has a significant effect on the growth and establishment of the plants The most effective factors on the growth and establishment of plants include soil factors climatic and habitat physiography Zygophyllum atriplicoides is a native species in Iran and grows in the large part of the country One of the main habitats of this species is semi arid regions of Isfahan province In the present study three Zygophyllum atriplicoides habitats were identified in Isfahan province the process of collecting vegetative information was accomplished using staratified random sampling So that each habitation divided into three strata based on the density of the plant including strong moderate and no Zygophyllum atriplicoides Random sampling was done in the strata Then in each strata twenty plots were considered with a size of four hundred square meters In addition to the slope and altitude as physiographic character density crown cover and average height of every Zygophyllum was calculated for each plot Soil samples of two depths 0 25 and 25 50 cm were collected at the foot of each shrub The data from fourteen Meteorological stations were used to determine the climatical properties of the sites In the laboratory pH EC lime gypsum calcium magnesium sodium gravel percentage and soil texture was determined In order to study phenology of the shrub in the Moute a set time series of images was taken monthly Growth stages indicating vital events such as bud growing leaf emergence flowering fruit forming falling leaves seed scattering and inactivity state were also recorded The percentage of colour channels RGB in the images extracted and shifting in the colour of every part of the plant such as leaves stems and fruits were analyzed separately Statistical analysis were done on the achieved data from soil laboratory and fild such as averaging simple correlation regression and ordination Relationship between the soil climate and physiographic factors with vegetative parameters canopy cover plant density and average height were studied The results showed that all three regional climates was semi arid based on Domarton method and average precipitation in these areas is 140 mm The most important factors affecting the growth of Zygophyllum atriplicoides include magnesium calcium and soil saturation the most adverse parameters are sodium sodium absorption ratio exchangeable sodium percentage lime and gypsum Altitude shows a direct relation with the average height of Zygophyllum atriplicoides The phenological records reveal that bud growing start in late March and leaf shading last until September Flowering is at April and peak of fruiting is in May Seeds ripen in June and scatter in July Results indicated a correlations between phenophasis and climatic factors such as rainfall and temperature Keywords Zygophyllum atriplicoides plant and environment relationship Ordination phenology Isfahan
