Evaluation of patterning defect in random winding by image processing through the linear mean and variance Rasoul Mahdi Mahdi sede@yahoo com October 31 2010 Department of Textile Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Farsi Supervisor Dr M Sheikhzadeh Email m sh110@cc iut ac irAbstractOne of the main operations prior to weaving process is the yarn operation in which a lot of goals are pursuedto improve the condition of weaving process Principally winding is one stage of the weaving preparationthat transfer the yarn of ring bobbin on weaving bobbin It is important to know that random winding a kindof bobbin winding has many benefits and applications in the textile industry where this process causes awinding problem In some of the diagonal packages successive coils of yarns coincide with one another andthis effect persists till the package diameter increases sufficiently as further yarn is wound The overwoundturns of yarn tend to form a hard band and hence the problem is termed patterning The concept may causemany problems during winding and unwinding Therefore recognizing the time of patterning beforeoccurrence is an important concept to prevent the following mentioned problems There are several techniques applied on random winders to diminish the intensity of ribbon formation However this mechanically effected action can be called passive in that the moments of its application aresimply periodic and not coincident with those when ribboning occurs The effectiveness of ribbon breakingachieved is therefore not optimum In this study the time of patterning in the random yarn winding is evaluated by image processing throughthe linear mean and variance For this purpose photographs of the bobbin surface were continuously takenwith specified time interval The photos of bobbin in the winding will be produced simultaneously A bi dimensional matrix was obtained for any picture by digitization the pictures Next the digitized images wereprocessed by calculation of mean and variance of any matrix In the first the mean or variance is calculatedfrom columns in the matrix and a vector obtained Then again the variance or mean of the vector will becalculated thus a number is obtained for each matrix Therefore there are four methods including mean ofmean mean of variance variance of mean and variance of variance The results show that among thedifferent methods the mean of variance is more accurate At the end a diagram of means and variances wereplotted and a peak was perceived in place of patterning defect By finding this peak the moment ofoccurrence of defect was diagnosed and the patterning is recognized Key WordsRandom winding patterning image processing mean variance
