Investigation into performance of polypropylene nanofibres filter media Behnaz Baghaei b baghaei@tx iut ac ir Date of Submission 2009 08 9 Department of Textile Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor M Zarrebini M YousefiAbstract The use of antibacterial filter media is one of the methods employed for removal orelimination of pathogenic micro organisms in filtration of liquids The advent of nanotechnologyand introduction of nano fibre based membranes with unique properties has revolutionizedadsorption based separation filtration technique As far as effective filtration is concerned theimportant properties offered by these filtration media are high specific area internal porecontinuity and chemical affinity at nano scale Electro spinning of fibres with diameter in therange of 100 to1000 nm are generally used in the production of these types of filter media In the present work polypropylene composite fibres containing nano silver particles wereproduced using melt electro spinning technique The nano silver particles were added in form ofmaster batch to the polymer melt The produced nano fibres were employed in production ofmulti layer membranes with thickness of 140 and 1200 micrometers In order to define the idealmembrane effect of influential parameters such as proportion of the nana silver particles in thepolymer melt and membranes thickness were investigated Results have shown that particle distribution along the fibre axis is acceptably uniform Gaspermeation fluxes and effective surface porosity of the membranes were determined using gaspermeation test method for dried membranes It was found that an increase in the number oflayers reduces the average value of the pore diameter which in turn improves filtration efficiency Finally it was concluded that the ideal membrane can successfully be employed in vastapplications in the filtration of liquids Keywords Nanofibres Melt electrospinning Membrane Silver particles Polypropylene Antibacterial
