Production of Photochromic Monofilament Polypropylene Yarn and Evaluation of Its Properties Elham Ghasemi e ghasemi@tx iut ac ir July 31 2010 Department of Textile Engeeniering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisors M Zarrebini zarrebini@cc iut ac ir H Tavanai tavanai@cc iut ac irAbstractThe ability of chromic pigments to change color in response to various environmental stimulus has gainedparamount importance within recent decades in manufacturing of textile structures Photochromic pigmentschange color under exposed to light Depending on the weavelength of the light such as UV and visible their response varies Photochromic pigments usually gain their original color when the light source isremoved In this research experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of photochromic masterbatches onundrawn monofilament polypropylene yarn and the resultant plain woven fabrics Two types ofphotochromic masterbatches with ability to change color to yellow and blue under the influence ofultraviolet radiation were employed Plain woven fabric samples were produced using the monofilamentyarns as weft threads Color change experiments were conducted using a portable reflection spectrophotometer under the influenceof D65 D65 UV UV and Sun light rays The results showed that the lightness L due to the addition of the two masterbatches in the yarn samples isalmost identical The existence of polyester viscose yarns as warp threads in the fabric samples resulted in anincrease in the lightness of the fabrics Under the influence of all light sources amount of yellow blueness b in the yarn samples containingyellow and blue masterbatches was found to be negative and positive respectively With the exception of sunlight similar color change was also observed with the fabric samples Thus as expected samples producedusing yellow and blue masterbatches tend to be yellow and blue respectively It was also found that variationin the value of yellow blueness b of the yarn samples tends to follow a regular increasing pattern In caseof yarn containing yellow masterbatche sampeles tend to have a deeper yellow color shade due to anincrease in the amount of corresponding masterbach In the case of yarns containing blue masterbatch increasing the amount of masterbatch result in a deeper blue shade In the yarn samples containing yellow masterbatche it was found that under the influence of UV D65 UVand Sun light rays the value of E a measure to difference in color tends to increase as the content of themasterbatch For yarns containing blue masterbatch E increased with increasing amount of masterbatcheonly under the influence of UV and UV D65 light sources It mast be pointed out that in the case of fabricsamples the value of E did nt follow a defined pattern The K S value of the yarn samples tends to increase under the influence of all light sources with increasingamount of the masterbatche Higher value of K S shows deepr color depth Ultraviolet Protection Factor UPF of Photochromic fabric samples was found to be higher in comparisonto pure polypropylene sample highlighting the positive effect of photochromic masterbatches on theblockage of UV DSC results showed that while melting and crystallization temperature of yarn samples containingphotochromic masterbatches were hardly different to those of pure polypropylene yarn the heat of meltingand crystallization of the photochromic samples in comparison to the reference sample were reduced It was found that generally addition of 0 5 to 2 of masterbatches reduces the yarn strength byapproximately 8 Keywords Photochromic Masterbatch Polypropelene Yarn Visible light UV radiation Color change Ultraviolet Protection
