Application of Modified Cloisite Na with L Leucine Amino Acid and TiO2 Nanoparticle for the Preparation of Polymer Nanocomposites Base on PVA Vahid Shahangi vahid shahangi@yahoo com 19 02 2011 Department of Chemistry Isfahan University of Technology 84156 83111 Isfahan Iran Supervisor Prof Shadpour Mallakpour E mail mallak@cc iut ac ir mallak777@yahoo com Department of Chemistry Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 I R Iran Abstract Poly vinyl alcohol organo modified Cloisite Na bionanocomposites were prepared with various amount of organo nanoclay For this purpose at first the pristine sodium montmorillonite Cloisite Na was modified by protonated of enantiomeric pure L leucine amino acid as a cationic surfactant Gallery spacing and thermal stability of this chiral organo nanoclay were studied by using X ray diffraction and thermogravimetric analysis respectively Then obtained novel poly vinyl alcohol organo modified Cloisite Na bionanocomposite films were prepared with different wt of the nanoclay using ultrasonic energy Also the bionanocomposite films were characterized by X ray diffraction XRD fourier transform infrared spectroscopy FT IR scanning electron microscopy SEM transmission electron microscopy TEM thermogravimetric analysis TGA and UV visible transmission spectra The poly vinyl alcohol organo modified Cloisite Na bionanocomposite films showed improvement in their thermal properties UV visible study also demonstrated that the visible region is not affected by the presence of organo nanoclay and optical clarity of the poly vinyl alcohol is retained In the second project Poly vinyl alcohol organo modified Cloisite Na TiO2 nanocamposites film were prepared with 10 wt of organo nanoclay and various amount of TiO2 Cloisite Na has been modified via cation exchange reaction using protonated form of natural L leucine amino acid as a cationic surfactant Then poly vinyl alcohol TiO2 organo nanoclay nanocomposites were synthesized by dispersion of TiO2 on the surfaces of organo nanoclay in poly vinyl alcohol matrix In this process nanocamposite films were prepared using ultrasonic energy following by solution film casting method Three nanocomposites with different loading of TiO2 1 3 and 6 wt were prepared and characterized by XRD FT IR field emission type scanning electron microscope FE SEM SEM TEM TGA and UV visible transmission spectra The results showed that the organo nanoclay and TiO2 were dispersed homogeneously in poly vinyl alcohol matrix and also showed improvement in their thermal property compared to the pure poly vinyl alcohol In the third project surface modification and characterization of TiO2 nano particles as an additive in the poly vinyl alcohol organo modified Cloisite Na nanocomposites with 10 wt of organo nanoclay were investigated For the improvement of nanoparticles dispersion and increasing possible interactions between nano particles and polymeric matrix the surface of the nano TiO2 is modified with silane coupling agent KH550 Poly vinyl alcohol modified TiO2 organo nanoclay nanocomposites were fabricated by dispersion of modified TiO2 on the surfaces of organo nanoclay in poly vinyl alcohol matrix In this study the nanocomposites were prepared by ultrasonic process and following by solution film casting method The novel nanocomposites were synthesized by immobilizing of modified TiO2 nanoparticles on the surface of organoclay layers The negatively charged on the silica layered can play an important role in dispersing nanosized TiO2 because the TiO2 nanoparticle have electrostatic positive charge and can readily be settled on the organoclay surface Three nanocomposites with different loading of modified TiO2 1 3 and 6 wt were prepared and characterized by FT IR XRD TGA TEM SEM FE SEM and UV visible transmission spectra Morphological images observed through SEM FE SEM and TEM The results show that the OMMT was dispersed homogeneously in PVA matrix and modified TiO2 nanoparticles are
