Estimation of Geomechanical Parameters of the Ahwaz Bangestan Reservoir by using Rock Mechanic Tests on Rock Specimens from the Formation in Order to Predict Required Pressure for Hydraulic Fracturing Mohamad Asadpour Khajehgani masadpour233@Gmail com 2011 03 16 Department of Mining Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Farsi Supervisor LohrasbFaramarzi lfaramarzi@cc iut ac ir Supervisor Hamid Hashemalhosseini Hamidh@cc iut ac ir Abstract Due to the increasing need to oil it seems necessary to increase production of oil wells On the other hand due to the reservoir pressure and closing of microscopic cracks and pores in the reservoir rock oil production reduces in the course of time Therefore in order to achieve higher production we need to drill new wells in the reservoir Considering the high costs of drilling it is not sensible to increase production from reservoirs Consequently it is more economical to stimulation the reservoir in order to increase permeability and enhance the production from wells in comparison with drilling new deep wells Ahwaz Bangestan oil reservoir is located below a part of Ahvaz with approximately 75 km length and 8 km width This reservoir consists of a sinus anticline with a mild dips that are oriented approximately north west south east Formations in the Ahwaz area from the surface to the depth include Aghajari Mishan Gachsaran Asmari Pabdeh Gurpi Ilam and Sarvak respectively The target reservoir is located in Ilam and Sarvak formation Different stimulation methods such as injection of acid have been done in this reservoir Hydraulic fracturing treatment is a very practical method with high performance that has been used widely in oil and gas reservoirs in other countries Since this work has not done In Iran this project is defined in this regard To perform a successful hydraulic fracturing treatment geomechanical data of ahvaz bangestan reservoir is needed Consequently considering the information of driven well logs in Ahvaz Bangestan reservoir and data of rock mechanics tests on the samples of this reservoir rock physical and mechanical parameters of Ahvaz Bangestan reservoir rock is determined Logs used in this project include DSI FMI and UBI logs that are driven in the Ahvaz Bangestan reservoir by Schlumberger Company Mechanical tests performed on rock samples considering the limited number of samples include uniaxial compressive strength test triaxial test Brazilian test T P coupling test and true triaxial test In addition to these tests in order to do microscopic study of reservoir rock thin sections have been prepared and studied microscopicly Furthermore measuring the velocity of longitudinal and shear waves in samples SEM Images and X ray diffraction analysis XRD were done on samples Mechanical parameters measured for the Ahvaz Bangestan reservoir rock include uniaxial compressive strength determined between 20 and 40 MPa yang s modulus determined between 2 to 17 GPa and Poisson s ratio determined between 0 3 to 0 4 According to these tests it has been observed that hydraulic fracturing can perform successfully in this reservoir The results of T P coupling tests show a decrease in reservoir rock strength due to the pore pressure caused by gases in the samples Furthermore considering the results of true triaxial tests it is likely that the breakout in well be caused by rockburst Using true triaxial test hydraulic fracturing pressure was assessed SEM images show obviously the structure of Ahvaz Bangestan reservoir rock with microscopic pores In addition fractures in samples after the tests show that the fractures in the rock occur in grains and the boundary between them Comparing physical and mechanical parameters obtained by DSI and NPHI logs and considering the results of rock mechanics tests on Ahvaz Bangestan reservoir rock samples it can be concluded that the result of using static and dynamic Young s modulus and the porosity obtaine
