Isfahan University of Technology Department of Textile Engineering Study of Effective Parameters on Fog Water Collecting with Fibrous Structures Hanie Banakar h banakar@tx iut ac ir Department of Textile Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Farsi M Sheikhzadeh m sh110@cc iut ac ir Abstract Water is the elixir of life without which there will be no living species on the earth Because of increasing demand of human to water supplementary sources must be considered Under favourable topographical and atmospheric conditions water can be collected from fog The small water droplets appear on the surface when fog precipitate on solid objects So to some extents fog can be utilized for relieving the water shortage by employing water collecting systems from fog and air moisture known as fog collectors One ingenious bug known as the fog beetle collects drinking water by perching in an opportune position that allows dew droplets to collect in ridges on its back The tenebrionid beetle Stenocara tilts its body forwards into the wind to collect water in a manner that is typical of the family Droplets form on the top front fused elytra and roll down the beetle s surface to its mouthparts The mechanism by which water is extracted from the air is inspired by this beetle to human Most of the fog collectors that have been used around the world are made up of polymers and textile materials The main purpose of this study was to determine physical parameters of textiles used in harvesting water from fog and dew Therefore several kinds of materials in the forms of yarn and fabric were investigated These materials were a collection of fibers with high medium and low moisture absorption properties Porosity and weave structure of yarns and fabrics were diverse A metallic monofilament made of aluminum with low specific heat capacity was compared with the materials of fibrous structures Each sample was mounted on a frame and placed in a condition chamber with saturated relative humidity and temperature of 15 to 20 C The average of the results was considered as the final outcome in data analysis Thus it was found that water collection efficiency was affected by the physical and fineness of fibres yarns capillary shape and the cross angle of fibres 1 90 were found to be effective structural properties of the samples In this respect hygroscopicity specific heat capacity of material type of yarn parameters These parameters were analyzed with a mathematical model and statistical methods The site existence parameter was rated and the correlation between effective parameters and the water collection efficiency was studied using the competitive matrix method Results showed that when the surface of a material has the potentiality to be cool enough more water can be collected from air moisture So parameters like water absorption specific heat capacity of material and the existence of sites for holding moisture on the surface of materials can be considered as effective parameters Water absorption and existence of sites cause evaporating and cooling the surface of material that leading to increase in condensation of water vapour air moisture Specific heat capacity provides conditions for samples to have a cool surface In addition existence of sites can be explained by type of yarn weave construction fineness of fibres yarns the cross angle of fibres and other geometric properties of fibres and yarns Key Words Fog collector Specific heat capacity Technical textile Wedge shape capillary Water collection efficiency Yarn
