2 Modeling and Analysis of Transverse Flux Permanent Magnet Machines using Improved Magnetic Equivalent Circuit Mohsen Zafarani m zafarani@ec iut ac ir Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Persian Dr Mehdi Moallem moallem@cc iut ac ir Dr Ahmadreza Tabesh a tabesh@cc iut ac ir Abstract Transverse flux machines are basically high pole synchronous machines which can operate at hightorque power densities at low speeds In this type of the machines the magnetic flux plane is perpendicular tothe rotation plane of the machine and for this reason the machine is called transverse flux Transverse fluxmachines TFMs due to high torque capability are suitable for the applications such as direct drive windpower generations submarine and ship propulsions and elevators However these types of machines havesome drawbacks and limitations including low power factors and high torque ripples Because ofperpendicular flux paths in a TFM analysis of this machine should be performed in a three dimensional 3D space Analyses approaches for TFMs are classified into the numerical and analytical methods Various 3Dfinite element approaches have been widely used for design and improving the performance of TFMs However the computational burden of a finite element method can be high due to 3D feature of the magneticflux in a TFM Magnetic equivalent circuit has been suggested and used as an alternative analytical methodfor analysis of a TFM This method due to its simplifying modeling assumptions is less accurate compared tofinite element methods however it is inherently faster than numerical methods Also the analytical modelprovides a useful tool for design purposes This thesis develops an improved magnetic equivalent circuit method for modeling and analysis oftransverse flux permanent magnet machines The significant features of the proposed model are accountingthe saturation phenomenon of ferromagnetic cores and considering the leakage flux in the model of themachine The proposed modeling approach uses the notion of flux tubes to represent flux paths of themachine including air gap stator rotor ferromagnetic materials and the permanent magnet of the rotor Then the magnetic equivalent circuit of the machine is established based on calculation of the permeance of theflux tubes within the machine To improve the accuracy of the model the shape of flux tubes are selected
