Synthesis and Characterization of Ni II Cu II Zn II and Co III Complexes With Unsymmetric H2pyrabza Schiff base ligands and catalytic effect of Zn2 in hydrolysis of imine Hajar Molaee Hj molaee@yahoo com Febreury 16 2011 Department of Chemistry Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor Prof M Amirnasr Email amirnasr@cc iut ac irAbstract Particular attention has recently been paid to the synthesis and study of diimino tetradentateSchiff base ligands and their complexes Interest in the design synthesis and characterization oftransition metal complexes of unsymmetrical Schiff base ligands stems from the fact that thecentral metal ions in natural systems are unsymmetrical These complexes are used in somechemical processes as catalysts and also as biological models in understanding the structure ofbiomolecules and biological processes Synthesis of such ligands is rather difficult compared totheir symmetrical counterparts Moreover during the formation of metal complexes ofunsymmetrical quadridentate Schiff base ligands one of the major problems which iscommonly encountered is the hydrolysis process which leads to the unsymmetrical tosymmetrical rearrangements of the Schiff base The first preparation of imines was reported inthe 19th century by Schiff 1864 Since then a variety of methods for the synthesis of imineshave been described The classical synthesis reported by Schiff involves the condensation of acarbonyl compound with an amine under azeotropic distillation Molecular sieves are then usedto completely remove water formed in the system In the 1990s an in situ method forwaterelimination was developed using dehydrating solvents such as tetramethyl orthosilicate ortrimethyl orthoformate In 2004 Chakraborti et al demonstrated that the efficiency of thesemethods is dependent on the use of highly electrophilic carbonyl compounds and stronglynucleophilic amines They proposed as an alternative the use of substances that function as Bro nsted Lowry or Lewis acids to activate the carbonyl group of aldehydes catalyze thenucleophilic attack by amines and dehydrate the system eliminating water as the final step Inthe past 12 years a number of innovations and new techniques have been reported includingsolvent free clay microwave irradiation solid state synthesis microwave water suspensionmedium molecular sieves infrared irradiation no solvent microwave solvent free solvent free CaO microwave and silica ultrasound irradiation Among these innovations microwaveirradiation has been extensively used due to its operational simplicity enhanced reaction rates and great selectivity On this basis in this thesis a new ligand H2pyrabza and its metalcomplexes which may have biochemical and photochemical applications are synthesized characterized and studied
