AbstractPrecision farming is a method for achieving higher productivity in plant and livestockproductions The higher productivity is obtained through optimizing feed consumption andtherefore reducing the cost of production Due to lack of economic justification in manyapplications the precision farming has not been prevalent Fresh dairy cows are very sensitive toquantity and quality of concentrate intake after postpartum Amount of concentrate feed energeticfeed on the first day after calving is low 3 to 5 kg while it must be increased gradually 4 to 5times during less than four weeks Precise control of concentrate consumption increasing 400 to600 grams per day for fresh cows is considerably effective on health peak of milk productionand animal life time In this research a device was designed and constructed which is capable ofcontrolling individual feed intake for the cows kept in groups The main criteria considered in thedesign of the system were 1 safety of animal and device 2 easy installation without anysignificant changes in livestock building 3 user friendly 4 automatic control of all necessaryprocesses and 5 capable of being economic and commercial The main components of the systemare 1 an electro pneumatic rotary gate for feed trough 2 a Radio Frequency Identification RFID system 3 a weighing system and 4 a control and central processing unit CPU Theidentification system consists of a reader and some ear tags The reader sends the information ofthe tag to the CPU through a RS232 interface Also a load cell and a signal conditionercontinuously send the weight of trough feed through a SPI interface to the CPU The CPUcontrols all processes related to the identification registration and measurement of concentrateconsumption updating and controlling the electro pneumatic rotary gate of the feed trough Thesoftware of the control system can be set in three modes A ID configuration for each animal B act as monitoring system for the weighing system and C the ready mode The first mode is use todefine the amount of concentrate in the first day after calving and daily concentrate increment The second mode is used to calibrate the weighing system and to be informed about the amountconcentrate left in the feed trough The system is normally adjusted in the third mode in thismode all processes necessary for accurately controlling the individual concentrate consumption are executed automatically based on the number of postpartum days The devices was evaluated insimulated condition similar to individual cow feed intake The system was evaluated in threefeeding frequencies 5 7 and 9 times per a day and three levels of daily increase in feed intake 300 400 and 500 grams The results showed that the average percentage of the error incontrolling the feed intake was 1 1 The performance of the control system in daily increasing ofconcentrate consumption was also linear and completely acceptable Keywords Intelligent feeding system RFID technology Fresh cows individually feedcontrol Concentrate
